How Do I Get My Arowana Off Of Live?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know how long it's been on live to be honest. I'm guessing it's whole life? I'll ask the person who imported it and sold it to me.

I never tried garlic I look more into that.

Bb- that does sound like you got lucky. I have no intentions of starving my arowana for three months. I may however fast it for a couple days though.

My 18 inch RTG is now over 8 weeks without eating anything!

I dont think you will ever get your gar to eat pellets if your try hard then you can get it to eat frozen food though. Good luck!

hey big dawg.. this sure is a tedious process for us, mfkers, than the fish :) my largest aro was around 16" when i started pellets.. i tried 3 times to starve her.. she was only goin for feeders.. but i guess i've been lucky really.. i kept tossing in the pellets along with the feeders and one day she jus started eating pellets.. and now all my aros eat pellets.. jus give it some more time.. i'm not sure about garlic.. my aros jus spat out the prawn that was soaked or rubbed with garlic.. and i've tried without garlic they are fine.. your aro will take pellets.. jus dont stress about it too much.. give it the time.. feed 6 days with pellets and prob the 7th day with a feeder or two along with pellets.. the aro might learn to think of it as food.. i dont know if it was this thread, someone had mentioned it earlier.. if your aro takes pellets and spits it out.. the aro knows it is food and will go for it soon.. cheers..

Thank you all for the insight and advice, it's much appreciated! It sounds like a waiting game from here and being consistant. Thanks again everyone it is very helpful!

mine wouldnt take pellets for a while, i fed it meal worms and slowly mixed in hikari food sticks with the meal worms til it finally took pellets. kinda weaned it off without having to starve it

arowana are easy to get off live foods just don't feed them live anymore

the gar is a different story

those would have to be big pellets for a full size gar hehe. when my gars were smaller i would drop pellets for my bichir and the gars would eat them as well. but since they are almost 1' i feed them silversides and shrimp.

gars are pretty easy to get off live i think or maybe im just lucky. to get my gars off live, i would drop a whole silverside and try to aim infront of the gar as it was falling. it would trigger a strike from them. if you miss, scoop the silverside and try again in a few minutes. eventually they will see silversides as food. my gars love silversides and shrimp. my arowana i do the same thing. i drop the shrimp infront of him and strike. the arowana sometimes even picks up the silversides or shrimp off the bottom for my gars.
