how do i get my oscar to start eating??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my oscar has this habit since the first day i bought him and its been like a week. he just lies flat on the bottom of the tank and is inactive whenever i go near the tank and look at him, then when i walk away or look at it from a distance without it noticing me it turns active and swims eagerly around again-.-(but he is just not eating whether he notice me or not)
is he shy to new tank?(btw hes the only fish in the tank)
i had ranchu goldfish before all they do is to just eat and poo i didnt know oscars have such interesting characteristics0.0

Water temp? Tankmates?

water temperature is around 27degree celsius and has no tank mates around.
the lfs i bought him from kept him with 3other red oscars in the same tank (so i was wondering could he missing his old frens and rejecting my food ,LoL) or imma buy the rest of the 3 from that same lfs and let them have a little reunion XD

Haha if my Oscar had not ate in a week he would jump out of the tank and sit at the dinner table with us till we fed it. I never heard of an Oscar that did not eat for that long no matter what the food.
:ROFL::ROFL:
So would mine lmao!
To the OP-he'll eat, give him time. The older the Oscar the more days it takes them to get their bearings in a new home. Yours is 5" so he's a bit older than the typical 2" Oscar. Pretty soon you'll be asking people how to padlock your fridge so he doesn't raid it in the middle of the night :-)
NO feeders! They're bad nutrition and bring in disease.

Typical Oscar, he is just sulking or "playing dead" because he is shy/scared in his new tank, and owner. I would highly suggest grabbing a chair, a drink and hang out right in front of the tank. Spend some time with him, and he will soon recognise that you are not a threat and will quit hiding when you come arround. Once he warms up to you he will be begging at the glass the second he see's you. But just in case this is not the case, have you tested the water? how long has the tank been running? how big is the tank?

oscars are smart fish and adapt to diet changes easily. i've never seen a picky oscar.

agree i never seen a picky oscar myself. they eat anything you throw in there.

i had a picky oscar wouldn't eat those pellets and i don't blame turned out the food was actually tainted and i forgot all about it until reading this post the gasses were so bad that the fire department came to my house.

I DON'T CONDONE USING THAT BRAND OF PELLETS.

however it' possible that i had one bad batch and most of it is ok.
i feed my 2 oscars brine shrimp.

I wish mine was pickier he eats ANYTHING in there even started to eat the algae wafers i give to the pleco. the lfs i got him from only fed him feeders so he was a little tentative about pellets in the beginning and only ate earthworms. really started to destroy pellets tho wen i brought home my JD idk if he was just being spiteful but it worked!!
