how do I keep poo off the bottom of my large tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would agree with the two plecos being a big contributor to the problem. as for adding 2 more fx5's....idk about that. sounds like over kill to me but idk.

do I use pvc pipe to bring the outlets to the bottom? I will just have to paint them black. do you use the stock nozels or just a elbow to point the flow?

yep, a member here datnoid 101 does it on his setups, heres a photo hope he doesn't mind if i post it here. if you paint it black use krylon & let it sit out for a while before putting it your tank.

use the fx5's and a sump, life would be alot cleaner for the fish.

Why not just vacuum it out with regular tank maintenance?

I do vacuum it every 2 days and sitll lots of poop. plus not fun with a 3foot tall tank had to make a vac with pvc pipe and is akward with a hose full of water above your head. the pvc pipe looks like a good idea. why is a sump better then canisters. seems like a fx5 would be more efficient. there are no holes for a sump. how would I do it on a tank like this.

I agree with earlier post that it comes with the territory of having big fish. You will have to either scoop it out or strategicly place your intakes and let the filters suck it up. But that would simply mean cleaning them more often.

You can have holes made for a sump - not a good option since it is already filled.
In the DIY section there are a few ideas and plans floating around to add something without adding holes to the tank, more of a pain without having holes since you're working on suction. At least for me. Plenty of experience and good ideas there.

Without a sump I would get a few AC110's or some other fancy HOB filters and add a powerhead on each side of the tank(if not more) to shuffle pooo around and up.

With a tank that big you could throw another hob or canister and it'll help for awhile but in the long run, a well though out sump could make all the difference. Plus running your powerheads as low in the tank you can shooting back up to the surface seems to keep my tank the cleanest.

But, like everyone has already said, big fish equals big poo. Especially the plecos....
