so I highly suspect that the freezer method is very quick.
I noticed that I screwed up and left out the word "not" from that sentence. I believe that the freezer method is NOT very quick. Luckily I caught that one right after I posted it...

I agree. It's not quick at all. Would have taken 20+ minutes with one of my small fish

best way is to freeze them, biggest fish I ever had to freeze was a " jumbo pleco " I guess its common pleco but enormous,, like over 20 inches long and as round as a milk jug, big nasty fish, my lfs had two that someone dropped off from a 500 gallon tank and one became pretty sick from something, so I had to help drop it in freezing water, pretty bad to watch really

Do we suppose after 13 months, there is still any debate on the fate of these sick fish?

or are we all just posting without reviewing the thread? everything has been said multiple times.

Here is my opinion.
To clear confusion about baking soda is fine is is an anesthetic, much like clove oil. it will nit suffocate a fish.
Clove oil is fine.

Ice water is 32 degrees. if you want to freeze a fish do it in ice water... add some salt & the temp goes even lower. A 10% salt solution should lower the freezing point to 20°F and a 20% salt solution should be about 2°F. a rather quick shutdown of metobolic functions, when put directly in the solution.

about your fish.
So tell us did ya do it?
How did ya do it?

Perhaps you cured them?

i was forced to kill yesterday i put a devil and a myan in a 20 gal qt tank overnight while i cleaned their 75 out completly. the devil tore up the myan no scales upside down barley breathing i threw the myan out on the patio and threw a brick on its head i think it was a swift death.but i think fish deserve a more gloriuos way to punch out if i had just saved some of those giant red rockets from the 4th of july he would have punched out tom and jerry style that wuold be sweet.:headbang2  :naughty:

slowly add NaCO3 to the tank. it will slowly lower the oxygen so they go to sleep and don't wake up. atleast that is what i have heard and it isnt painful like smashing them into the wall lol sorry to hear about your fish man

Do you intend to say NaHCO3? That would be Sodium hydrogen carbonate (Baking soda)

In my experience the clove oil (eugenol a tooth ache remedy) option (as detailed in a previous post) is the easiest to get hold of for most people. It is an anaesthetic and death is by sedation (You can bring the fish back around by putting in clean aerated water) and then overdose, and very peaceful. I understand some people first sedate the fish then once it is heavily under add alcohol (vodka) maybe 25% by volume. Leave it there for 15 mins or so.

MS-222 is also an anaesthetic, same deal. It is what is used widely in aquaculture, fisheries and by vets or labs. It is a white powder that is mixed into water depends on size of fish (also what sort of skin and scales can slow it down i.e. an arapaima) and volume of water. I have used this stuff the most, but generally recovered animals for release unharmed.

I have worked in a few research labs and uni's :smurf (no nerd icon to be found) and these two methods (not alcohol or freezing) have been approved by animal ethics committees made up of various experts and lay persons from the community so as to be widely accepted.

I understand that recent research has indicated that there are more pain receptors in fish than previously thought, so some of the other suggestions may not be ideal. Being a keen fisherman myself (a bit ironic some may say), the two accepted methods in that group are with a "priest" a heavy blunt instrument to the top of head just behind the eyes or with an "icky stick" a sharp s.s. point to the brain.

I'm a bit worried now - I seem to know a little to much about killing fish .
