so i just got a 1 gallon tank for free from a friend and i am using it already.
I did not cycle it and have it bare bottom. i dont know if this is the best idea. should i put some gravel from one of my other tanks in it to help? or just water changes every day? i mean is only one gallon its not hard it takes 5 mins.
it has a little air filler. i was thinking i might pick up a small 5- 10 gallon one to hang on the back and put some of the little ceramic rings so it can grow some BB tho i dont know if that will work or should i just switch to a sponge filter?

any advice or ideas would help

this tank is just used as a small 3-4 week grow out for my guppy fry

at the moment there are 3 full grown females in the tank waiting to drop or for my other new tank to finish cycling.

and about 6 4 week old fry waiting for new tank and 3 1 week old fry.

So that could be quite a few fish.
I would put a little filter on there (something that doe snot make a lot of current like a sponge filter) and put some mulm in the tank from your other tanks

i will have to go pick up a sponge filter tomorrow. it has this weird little wispper filter that uses am air line and filter inserts. think this would be enough or just go with the sponge as there would be more room for BB?

old gravel, filter media from other established tanks... if you do this you'll still have to change some water every day for a week or so until it starts to propagate in the tank. I have done this with a few 1 gallon fish bowls and it works just fine.

I also switched fake plastic plants, the ones with high surface area, as well as java moss from planted tanks. the bottom of the fern usually contains a lot of BB.

what is "filter media"? like rocks and decor thats in the tank with BB on it or stuff thats actually in my HOB filler?

the mulm out of your other filters. There would probably be a small amount of BB on the rocks, but not a lot really. Much more in the filter.

I use a sponge filter for mine. I have a 1.5 gallon that I put danio fry into for about a week or so when I first find them. I keep a hydro sponge tossed into the sump of the big tank and when I see fry I grab the sponge and fire up the little nursery tank.

7-10 days later they go into a 16 gallon tank with that same sponge. I don't put an HOB on them until they are at least 3/4 of an inch long. Guppy fry start out about 1/2 inch long. They are easier. Danio fry start out the size of an eye lash.

i just picked up a used one from my LFS that they were saving till they needed it sold it to me for same price as a new one so i did not have to wait for it to grow BB :) got to check water when i get home. i left it over night set up no fish in it yet tho.
