if he is shy i would say he most likely would not be happy with a bare tank.one thing i did with mine was to give a 2nd cave when he was young so he could still hide but have the end looking out into the room so he got to watch everything and feel safe.
How do people keep their CK's?

Nice yeah. I keep mine in a planted tank with a big pile of wood he can hide in. and when in the pond he has branches to be under
I got rid of mine 16 days ago, he was about 9 or 10". I sure do miss him, he had many spots all throughout his body. He went to a bigger and better home.
Oh and I think all clown knives should have hiding places...otherwise they will feel insecure. Not only that but if they're in a tank with a bright light like the one above, they can seek refuge in their hiding place where it is darker. They do not like a lot of light, they prefer little to no light. I guess to each his own though, people can keep their cks how they want to keep them but IMO, they're much happier with hiding places and little to no lighting

I didn't have a tank big enough to house him for life and I currently have no job. I will for sure be keeping CKs as well as some other knife fish again in the future when I have the means to do so
I keep my two footer ck in a 227gal tank with his 2' com pleco friend and two 1.64 pangasius and 1.5' tiretrack eel.
