sounds like a pain and too much hassle. i would throw it away, learn from the rip off, never buy it again and buy very cheap floss mat or extremely fine foam mat used in koi filters.
Well a pressure washer seems to work really well on them.....
Definetly going to have to rig up something to be able to boil this stuff.
I replaced the blue bonded filter mat with this stuff. I think it does a MUCH better job.
And as far as throwing it away cause it's a rip off....... Gonna have to pass on that. I've had MANY different kinds of mechanical media in my wet/dry and in my experience NOTHING even holds a candle to this stuff.
I don't use this particular media but I use filter socks instead on my sump for the mechanical. I have like 5 and just pull the dirty one off and slap a new one on. I just throw the dirty one in the wash machine and let it air dry. Wife doesn't care so I guess that would be your only worry. Not sure how durable that is compared to a filter sock though. May fall apart in a wash machine.
Do you just use 1 size of sock or sock for the big stuff and other media for the small stuff?
I've never tried socks. Just seems to me that you're compromising between finding a size that's big enough to not get plugged all the time, yet small enough to filter out the crap.
I'm in the process of building a pair of sumps though so I'de like to hear your input. Maybe I'll try some socks.
i use pool bleach and water to clean my large filter elements soaking overnight. i rinse them well and dry them out, should not smell like chlorine, can always rinse with prime and water etc or sodium thiosulfate ( cheap )
So just soak in bleech overnite then rinse out eh? Sounds easy enough. I have just always been very paranoid about using any kind of cleaners like bleech, and residual soap like in the washer. But if you guys say it's OK I'de give it a shot.
One rule I learned on here that somebody else said about cleaning anything with bleach or cleaning agent, "Once you think it's clean rinse it again."
As for the socks. It is the only mechanical filtration on my sump as of now and it seems to be doing the job. Still new to sumps set ups though and tank is still pretty new as far as not being cycled for very long. I am going to give it another month and see if a finer mechanical filtration is needed for polishing the water. I will see though. I change out the socks when I do a water change. Does not seem to need to be done more than that as of now. Hope this helps.
Whats wrong with the pressure washer?
When I do the gravel vac/water change, I just put the hose to my pressure washer and go to town. Mine doesn't need alot of volume when I use the rotating tip...For me that's quick and easy...
