How do you clean your planted tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah that is good to do. Unless there are plant roots near the gravel, vac it so that you don't have extra mulm.

The tank looks great so far, but I will have to monitor nitrates.

I have a question: I use Prime, and it says that it neutrlaizes nitrate. Does this mean that it will be unusable for plants? And will it still show up on a test?

I wouldn't use prime on a planted tank, however, you can just get a fert that has nitrogen, and that will fix you right up. Just be certain how much you are putting in.

I have been using for two months no problems. The plants are growing like crazy.

I do supplement with Kent Freshwater Plant, that made a huge difference.

I use NPK w/ iron by Nutrafin. Great stuff. Yeah if you are using a fert then the prime is fine.

The fert I use only has potassium, iron, and micronutrients, no nitro but it works great.

What I do is gravel vac all the easy places and leave everything else alone...the plants will thank you for it. After a while though you can get alot of buildup in all the nooks and crannies...especially if you got driftwood and or rocks.
What I do the day before cleaning out my canister filter i take a powerhead and blow the water into those hard to reach areas. it gets all that crap floating around but also allows for the filter to grab alot of it. whatever the filter dont get stays in the tank but it does get alot of it. This keeps all the detrius in check...some is ok for plants to much is bad for water quality.

That's pretty much what I was thinking thanks for the help, everybody.
