How do "You" control nitrates?

I thought that was pretty cool now how do you make it work on larger tanks

That's the fantasy I guess. I tried describing an idea above. Not sure if it was descriptive enough. Let me know if you have any ideas though.

Well here is a similar concept for larger aquariums http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnE674E-q2k although I doubt it cleans all the dirt like they claim in both examples. I think most of the dirt would remain trapped between the gravel and on decor and won't reach the bottom reservoir until in starts breaking down, hence u'll still b needing a bio filtration

I would still want a bio filter. I would also want a mechanical filter as well. I think running a sump and using something like this new self-cleaning idea to save me a trip down into the tank for snaking is plausible. I had thought that instead of a single screen across members, Something would have to be done to make the water flow across the whole bottom and make all waste exit. I had thought using members that were setup like blinds would work. Keep them open so waste falls through and then shut them so water has to flow under all of them from the far end of the members to the exit tube. I might be able to scribble this Saturday when I'm off work.

So ur thinking of a bare bottom setup with blinds and a compartment under them? If so then I guess it could work. Keeping them open and then shutting them when cleaning forcing a water flow in one direction and swooping all waste from the bottom. And with a bio and mechanical filter, it will just substitute gravel vacuuming and make cleaning easier
