what?!? using est. media is the best way to go. using fish to cycle can kill the fish in the process, using pure ammonia can be tricky, and if you dont have est media im sure your lfs will give you some

I use a fish and old media. Realize every time you add a fish you put yourself through a mini cycle.

5 gallons of dirty water from an established tank via a gravel vac will cycle any size tank.

Or just a sponge/pad from a cycled tank.

The old-school way, so I've been told by a few, was to pee in the tank once a day until test kits show no ammonia, then do a very large (like 90%) water change and add your fish. Now if you don't have access to live culture from a filter and don't want to pee in your tank (not so good, think hormones, human metabolic junk, etc.), pure ammonia is the easiest thing to use. There are articles here full of how to do that.
