how do you dissolve aquarium salt?

I just use a fine grain salt rather than the API which has the large crystals and let it dissolve in the tank.

When I do a W/C, I add a little bit at a time with the re-fill of water...that way I'm forced to watch the water level, and that avoids wet carpet...

Yeah, I dump the last bit in the tank also. It seems like it never fully disolves no matter how long I wait.

Warm water, or anything at a higher temperature acts as a catalyst; increases rate of molecular collision. This in return will allow solutes to dissolve faster.
