How do you encourage a male to breed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just feel you have to wait. Some are more prolific than others. I’ve found a size difference helps as well. When the rays are too close in size it makes it tougher for the male.
Should the female be bigger than the male because he chews her up during the process?

When my male BD finally started breeding my female Leo he was 12-13 inches and 5 yrs old. She was 19". And 9 yrs old. Together from the time he was about 7". He never left any real marks to show when he started. I seen one little bite mark on her rear flipper and that was it. Didnt know she was pregnant till she had pups several months later.

Some say male competition but I also feel that can back fire as one me may be more aggressive breeding and out compete the one you are wanting to breed. I have a male Hen 5 yrs old that I am hopeing this will work with.

Another way which I am currently trying is one of the males breed a female, then when you know she is pregnant seperate the males. When she births the pups add the male you want to breed and hopefully the hormones she releases will trigger him to breed her.

Would you say 2:1 f:m mix would have good chances of breeding?

In Asia I think they drop a female in a pond full of males

That’s part of the reason, you don’t want a huge male beating up on a female that can’t get away from him.

Also, just the geometry of it. A big male on a smaller female struggled to get the angle right to penetrate. I’ve seen some larger males try repeatedly, but when they invert to complete the task their clasper is just too far out past her disc. On the larger females he lands no problem.

I love landing with no problem
