How do you feed monster fish?

I keep my Jack mostly on live gudgeons and very small mullet at the moment. I sneak pellets into his feeders because they usually will not take anything but live fish and over time dead ones. When I do starve him for a few days he will eat some beef heart and prawn though, slowly waning him to take different foods. But in the wild these fish sit on bait schools and all they eat are live foods so I don't see why feeding your monsters manufactured food should do any more justice than live food, as long as you quarantine you feeders especially if you take them from the wild. Also a lot more of a show lol.

If we are talking about a catfish, all bets are off. They'll take anything and everything.

I have two 20"+ achara catfish that eats anything, and everything @ anytime. Gluttonous! Regardless, my arowana & bgk still get well fed. The bgk, eats like the achara's while the arowana eats large food once or twice a week. He'll nibble on hikari jumbo sticks regularly, but like stated earlier, is selective about meaty foods. Daily I'll throw in a handful of dry food. In the evening, I thaw out some market shrimp and frozen smelts and throw them in my aquarium for a free for all feeding frenzy. I Love it! The smelts actully float so when my arowana feels like it, he gets them first but as soon as the achara's sniff out food, they go to the top and absolutely murder everything.

Thanks for the responses!

What volume of food does it take to feed fish like this every week? For example, how much does a 24" RTC actually eat?

It will take some experimentation on your part. RTC are fast growers. Try 6 raw shrimp. If your cat looks pregnant, he's full. Then don't feed again until his belly is flat. Btw, 6 is not a magic number, you'll have to decide how many shrimp to offer. My 16" RTC would take 4 raw jumbo shrimp before it was full. And of course, for all catfish keep shells and tails on.

I feed my fish every day, once or twice daily. They fast on the weekends.

Ha ha,every now and then I get visitors over the weekend who might want to see the fish eat...I tell them that they are on a diet lol

Interesting that ye don't feed them on the weekends. That would help a lot with water quality as well I'd say.

I feed mine every day.

I usually just throw in a few 7mm NLS pellets and some floating sticks. Then for the fish that don't eat that, I stuff some prawns with the pellets and give them that.

I find 3 or 4 prawns will fill up my larger fish which include a 2' arowana and a large oscar
