how do you feel about fancy goldfish?

i hate all kinds of selectively bred animals, from cats & dogs over budgerigars & canarys to guppies and goldfish
i just happen to like the natural look of animals, and don't even like non-natural coloration such as yellow budgies
one exception though: i'm gonna get me some crystal red shrimp for my nano tank, because anything non-coloured would be too drab :nilly:
i'll put some wild guppies in there too, though
so all is well ;)
selective breeding that doesn't only affect color but also shape and size, well, i just find that downright disgusting
these strange lionhead goldfish look like they have a brain tumor or something similar...also, they couldn't even survive in the wild, just because of their physical appearance
i just can't see where the fun would be in keeping such a sickly, inbred pet...but to each his own, as long as the animal doesn't suffer (parrot cichlid comes to mind :()

Well I like pearlscales and eggfish but pon-poms and the telescopes are cruel but bubble eyes are just a comedy fish that a 3 yr old would want Cruel!Altough I do like RTC x Paroon shark...Its nice

Meh, I do not care for the "fancy" varieties. I do however have 3 comets that I've had for about 2 years now that I do adore.

Be carful with those natural guppys, i started out with 3 and now i have about 50.

They will breed to no end, and they will eventually aqure defects and illness from overpopulation. make sure you have a large enough tank to hold large amounts of guppy. good filtration. and maybe even a medium sized predator to deal with the slower offspring once population becomes a problem. ;) I've even had TB and and dropsy outbreaks from obvious overcrouding. but besides that they don't die.

People that slam "man made" animals should remember that their Fido or Kitty is also line bred. Weiner dogs do not roam the plains. Labs do not naturaly cruise the wet lands. poodles are not the knig of the jungle.

EXACTLY. Unless you own a wolf, you have the equivalent of a 'fancy dog'. It is full of congenital defects just like the 'freak goldfish' too.

I love fancy goldfish. In terms of personality, they are very gentle fish that develop individual behavioural traits. Mine will eat from my hand, swim into my hand when I'm cleaning the tank, follow you around when you are in the room, etc. They don't seem to interact much with one another, except when breeding or bumping into each other, and don't really interact much with their environment except to devour plants and suck up gravel.

I have a black moor that always checks the filter intakes after feeding, because she will be the one that finds pellets that got stuck to them. I have a butterfly-tail that prefers to feed at the top, a ranchu that specializes in eating algae, and a ranchu that won't leave me alone when I'm cleaning the tank. If you spend enough time with a species of fish, you learn a lot about them and notice little subleties that cumulatively beocme 'personality'.

I really like them. That said, there have been a couple times I have had a goldfish develop swim bladder disease and I thought about not getting anymore. It is very sad to see them succumb to traits that are a result of select breeding.

However, labs and German shepherds blow out their hips and knees, many breeds develop rare cancers more than other breeds, etc. I've never heard anyone say it is cruel to own a purebred dog, even though they have many, many problems that would be practically non-existent in wild populations or well-mixed mutts.

They were selectively bred for 1000's of years and are HUGE in Japan and China. We may see them as plain and boring, but they are a cultural component in some countries...

They aren't everyones' cup of tea... understandable. I love moors and ranchus, but would never think of getting a bubble eye, celestial eye, pom pom, oranda, etc. Just preference. As long as everyone treats their fish with respect and care, nothing wrong with keeping them.

/stepping of the goldfish soapbox ;)

Dogs don't compare exactly to gold fish. Dogs that develop hip and joint problems as a result of old age doesn't compare to a fish that is born with a physical defect and can't swim properly its whole life. I've never heard of anyone breeding dogs to have a double tail, four back legs, telescopic eyes etc. But anyway, I don't care for many of the fancy gold fish. I like ranchus and lion heads.
