how do you feel about fancy goldfish?

alright, first i have to say that is an impressive goldfish.

second, i agree that fish and dogs could be a fairly close comparison in terms of breeding for what people want. i've found a lot of people to be rather contradictory on the subject of selectivly bred fish. someone that says blood parrots and orandas are an abomanation will turn around and talk about the impressive flowerhorn or rtcx they just bought. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. my wife doesn't understand why i baby my "big ugly fish"(my jag), but i think it's a beautiful fish. peaple have different tastes, and like it or not hybrids are here to stay as they have been for hundreds of years.

I agree with everything you said above, but the question was...What do you think of UGLY, DEFORMED, fish, or somthing like that  Anyway, if you dont want opinions dont ask. I fully believe that as long as there is a dollar to be made, in anyway, some weirdo will arrange to do it, If someone thinks a 2 legged dog with its tail where its head ought to be, IT will be made. Or a fish so deformed that it cant even swim, and you have to feed it with a squirt bottle. I, would not have either of those, BUT if the author of this thread thinks they are cute, more power to him, Just dont whine when other folks dont like em.

i agree with the statement that dogs and fish are bred with "deformities"....but those "deformities" are appealing to many people. Otherwise, we wouldn't have them. Personally, I think its just the nature of it to do so. Its pretty, therefore it survives because WE make it so. Those soft pink pigs we eat are tasty, therefore they survive as a species as we make it so. That daschaund with the deformed lengthy body survives because we think its cute.

personally, i like fancy goldfish. They are a very peaceful fish and comedy to watch. You can train them. Unfortunately, i've never had any luck with them. One of my favorite fish was a black moor .. but it got ich like once a month....then i added two other fancies and they got swim bladder...then the moor got swim bladder. i just let the tank wipe out and started fresh with natives :)

Someone said they wouldn't survive in the wild... and that's true. But that's the main point, they're not IN the wild. They're in the pet trade being taken care of.

For example, sheep wouldn't survive in the wild either, that's because humans took mountain goats and domesticated them. And now sheep are used for meat and milk and wool.

There is no difference between breeding an animal to a lower form than it's wild counterpart because you NEED it than because you WANT it. You can't wear wool and eat lamb, or cow, or pig, or CORN and BANANAS, and then turn around and say that you despise everything that is unnatural. Like glasses, for example. If someone is born with astigmatism do we just reject them because of their "birth defect" and "unnaturalness"?

Almost all parents who have children with Down syndrome will tell you that they love their children to death. Well, same goes for some of us and fancy goldfish. Yes, we realize they're not "natural", but that doesn't make them bad!

PS Things that are unnatural... glasses, telephones, electric wires, televisions, fish tanks, fish filters, cars, airplanes, polyester, paint, air conditioners, heaters, etc etc. Now, if someone on this site has NONE of these things, (oh, wait, I forgot to mention COMPUTERS), then yes, hate fancy goldfish all you want.

(However, if you don't like fancy goldfish simply because of aesthetics, then that's different. I happen to think gulper cats are FUGLY.)

they are dirty, and not a very good fish

Find me any fish comparable to their mass that do not poop massive amounts.

Is this road bumpy or did this thread just get derailed?

Interesting tank though, take it to the DIY section.
