I've recently come across posts on this site and others stating how disgusting the fancy goldfish varieties (i.e. telescope, oranda, bubble eye) are, and that it is cruel to breed them due to the physical "mutations" being for the fishkeepers pleasure while being detrimental to the fish's function and overall health. I think that there is no harm in these varieties as they have existed for many many years and the fish seem to do just fine in the aquarium. Actually, I only really like the moors and telescope eyes-regular goldfish are a bit to plain for me. What I'm getting at here is how do YOU feel about fancy goldfish?

I suppose , Its like lots of things in this world, boils down to personal preference. My personal preference would be NO manufactured fish of any kind, If you cant be happy with at least ONE species out of a blue zillion possibilities, take up another hobby. There is plenty of cross breeding in nature, which is natural, and unavoidable. Again, i stress this is my feelings like it or not, and you have yours, whether i like it or not and thats the way it should be. But since you asked :)

I don't like the fancies for the most part... But still, I have seen a few that I have considered setting a tank up for. The fancy goldfish have been in the hobby for hundreds of years, if not more. They aren't going anywhere. Now, why don't we talk about the fish we like and not ***** about the ones we don't.

I brought this up because the thought that the selective breeding of these types of goldfish for their "mutations" was in any way cruel never crossed my mind. I mean selective breeding spreads throughout our everyday lives in the food that we eat. It spreads into other branches of the pet trade as well. I just thought it would be an interesting point of discussion, even over something as trivial as a goldfish lol.

Not only are they boring to watch but they dont make good feeders either. The only enjoyment I get from them is watching them get eaten by other fish.
not cool dude:(

I know goldfish arent very interesting, but i thought that the idea that it could somehow be ethically wrong to breed them for their unusual appearances could be. That is the point of the thread. if you didnt understand.
