I was wondering how do you get rid of illegal fish. I saw a post that a person had a illegal fish (to the usa) I was wondering how do you get rid of a fish like this. (I don't have a illegal fish it's just a question) my thoughts of what to do and why they wont work for me.

1. release it into the wild. Very illegal and I would never ever never under any situation do that.
2. Kill it. If it is big how, I wouldn't wont to kill a fish for no health reason
3. Sell it. wouldn't want to pass the burden on or get caught in a sting.
4. Donation to a zoo or wild life place. Would they take it and they might call the law.

So what would you do. Please remember I don't have a illegal fish.

I would think the local zoo or public aquarium would notify the authorities if it was illegal. They would definitely play by the rules. I would suggest either secretly keep it or pass it on to someone else u trust to care for it or kill it...

^ I agree the only real option besides keeping it would seem to be to kill it...

Since i'm guessing even for a place like a zoo, they would first need a special license or permit before they could keep and exhibit said animal... especially if its illegal because its endangered or banned in the country...

Well the best idea would be kill the fish. Keeping fish secretly sometimes doesn't work. Remember Rocky the giant snakehead? someone tipped the owner off and he fought off the officals as they finally allow him to kept the old snakehead. Of course this Rocky the snakehead was already owned before the ban was in effect.

Kill the illegal fish regardless of the fish's size and health.

Considering MFK is pretty law abiding when it comes to fish laws, and the fact there are feds? Police? On these boards that have the power to come to your place with a warrant, i would not risk it...

Especially considering that there has been a person who had been caught in real life because of what was posted on here...

Actually, the count is currently more than 3 arrested for illegal species importation/possession. That's 3 site members. The number of people arrest, in association with members, is even higher.

Thanks Oddball for clearing that up... I knew there must have been more but only heard of one...

yeah, I have personally spoken with wildlife enforcement officers in the mid atlantic and they mentioned this site as one that they often check for any illegal fishkeeping activity. We were on the topic of snakeheads when we spoke, but I have no doubt that they'd be looking for several illegal species.

Everyone knows the story of Rocky the snakehead in NY. Everyone gets caught, it's not a matter of if you'll get caught, it's a matter of when. If you have an illegal fish, I'd say the best way to get rid of it is to kill it, unfortunately. Any other way and you're involving other people and risking the fines other penalties.
