How do you guys do water changes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use an aqueon water changer (like the python). Just vac and suck out 40-50% then adjust my sink to temp by hand and fill her back up, adding prime for entire tank volume.

Gave up on buckets long ago. :D

Aqueon waterchanging hose. It's the best investment I've made.

Wait so do you guys add the conditioner before or after you put the water in from the sink?

5 gallon buckets. 2 at a time. I do curls with them as I walk them to the toilet to empty them.

Just get an extension like Tiller11 stated. Remove water 50% at most add prime for the tank volume and refill might take longer cus it has to go upstairs but imo thats your best bet. Other than moving the tank to a better location. If you live in a warm climate then the garden hose should work fine.

I didn't want to run a hose from a different floor because I'm afraid of overfilling (I guess you can just gauge and run back upstairs lol). Compromise is the only solution sometimes!

Thanks for everyones reply. Definitely a lot of help seeing as WCing is potentially the most labor intensive part of our hobby. Always best to never work hard.. work smart :)

Get an extension for your hose to run it upstairs... Thats what i did?

Python with a Eheim 2260 (600gph) pump on the tank end of the hose. :D MFKeeping lol
Nice lol, that's why we're all here :)

With a little ingenuity and $40, I made an attachement for the outlet of my filter that does water changes for me. Hook up a hose, turn some knobs, water's changed. It's so easy I feel like I'm cheating.

Read about it here!

Definitely a cool idea, I'll have to look into it for sure!

My water change, 50% on a 300 gallon, only drops the temp 10 degrees with outside water, 80-72 degrees is fine for most tropical fish. Drain it by turning on the hose in the tank then shut it off and it back flows

I would have thought a 50% WC would have dropped more than 10 degrees. Good idea on the draining part if you haven't got a pump.

I use the pump to suck out the water and a direct hose to the tape to fill up water from a stock tank because I only use still water.
Sounds easy enough! Welcome to MFK :)

I've always wondered this. I add it as I go, but I assume you guys never have trouble if you dose the entire tank, before filling any water?

I do 50% on my 150 with a 50 ft hose to the faucet outside the house. The temp would drop about 10 deg if I do WC during the day. If do WC at night I don't do more than 35% due to water temp extremely cold.

On my 240g, I just do 50% but thats if its a hot DAY! in which the weather has been nice warm so 50% WC is good.(reg day still do the same) tank temp drops only 4 deg. I also flush out the sump/drain a little out. For me it is quite easy I just get both my aqeuon vac hose and the python out the window into a little garden. then I just get the garden hose and fill it up almost where its about drain into the overflow then I add all my dechlorinaters ETC.
Cold weather I do the same as ^^FishNCash, 35-20% to conserve heat in my tank
