How do you mature your filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay that's great! Given me a lot more confidence now; a lot of sources say a ray should only be added to a mature tank i.e. 6 - 12 month. Did you add more ammonia than usual during your cycle due to the larger stocking of a ray?

With my new tank i shut the old tank down took all the old media from my old filters and dumped it in my sump then got a few bottles of seachem stability put some of that in moved all my fish to the new tank then added stability for 7 days as per instructions on the bottle

all fish were moved in the new tank the same day the old tank was shut down i never had any problems so i recommend seacheam stability

to tell the truth if you are scared about bio load then your filters are to small

I'm not scared about my filters I'm just getting my head around the fishless cycle for my ray's, just wondering whether I should dose higher ammonia to cope with this!

Once people start asking about bio load it normally means more filtration is needed no fact or size of filters were given

With this seachea stability it says you can add fish the same day as you set the tank up I did add old filter media but did add fish the same day with no problems so I would say it works as with most seachem products it worked well for me

If you don't understand how to cycle a tank for any fish not just rays you should go to the setup and filteration section odd this for as there you will find lots of info on setting up and cycling a new tank

Seriously...why re u guys overthere are so twitchy with filtration. Too much rules. Keep it simple.

"have as many filters u can imagine in the tank" doesnt matter what kind of filter as long as it is not internal filter.
"filtration must at least 10 times the volume of your tank per hour"
"use the best biomedia u can afford"

The idea is 1 only. Overkill filtration.
Thats it end of story. U got overkill filtration u can get as many rays your tank can accomodate.

How to mature? Wait, by nature it will. no need for bacteria booster, amonia etc. U spend too much on those craps. Just use a goldfish comet 1 or 2 for a week then add your rays. Simple.

Test your water parameters to see if your filter can handle your stock.
