Well not really. If u start well u will end up well. As i said if u have an overkill filtration, regular water change and some common sense in feeding habits as well as rays population in tank, there will never be ammonia nitrit build up. There is no risk. I've kept fish for over 15 years and i never use such test kit, i bought once and did some test but got bored as my water is always fine.
I own few expensive fish, some of them are predators. I even have succesfully bred pleco. One thing i always use is ph test thats it. I even use nature to create soft water (ketapang leaves)
The key is your filtration the better it is the less work u would have.
But its just me. I always keep it simple and efficient and cost effective.
