How do you measure up?

The bump is called a nuchal hump (you may see flowerhorn keepers calling them koks). It contains water and fat, and can be inflated or deflated depending on the fish's nutritional and SOCIAL status! Usually dominant males have the largest. Females and subordinate males may show it a little as well if they are well fed. :)

Oh sounds like a camels hump sorta! So it's a sign of dominance and good health?

I use Massivore as their staple (any other pellet designed for carnivores will work), but also add frozen foods (thawed out first, of course!) like lake smelt and market shrimp.

Food is only one part of the equation, though! Gotta keep up with their water changes, (25-20% weekly) moreso than you would with community aquariums! You'll want to keep them toasty, too. 80-82*F for the adults is a tad on the cool side, babies and young juveniles do best at 86*F. That also means you have to keep up with aeration too, because the warmer water drives oxygen out of the water.

(Sorry to derail the thread! There are a lot of good topics on pbass husbandry in the Cichla subforum, made by folks who have been raising these things for decades! Back to the pictures! Yardsticks, measuring tapes, rulers for everyone!!)

It's hard to get all nine of the bass in one picture with a ruler, so this will have to do.

Thanks kenD, I'm still looking for a xingu, pinima (walker ;) ) and a broko to top off my set.
