How do you prefer your fish?

I didn't read most of this thread. But some like to keep larger fish because they can actually house them for life. I rather keep larger fish then a group of small fish that WILL out grow most tanks.

I completely agree with this. I'm curious how many people say small fish because they can't keep a large fish in their tank? Again, I love the large fish...but at this point I don't have a really choice. Anything under 12 inches is food in my tanks and anything under two feet better watch its back. The joys of keeping big catfish;)

This is exactly where i stand.

I have nor the patience, neither the space, to gorow fish out. Everything must be very big, or else.

I would add. Sometimes i have no choice to grow out as the same fish at 6"+ is a heck of a lot more than fry size or smaller. For example 6 1" festae will cost $7 each while 2-3 9" sexed festae or adult pair would cost an amount i dont have. So for those harder to find rarer things 1" is all i can afford and i have to grow out if i want to keep that species. Also like what recently happened with some species im keeping i want one that looks a particular way and if i dont find a larger one i have to buy a group and hope my dream fish is in there and sell the rest.

I prefer to get 6-8 juvenile fish. This way I most likely will end up with a pair that I can spawn. With most fish, if you can't breed em, why feed em. LOL!

I think it would depend on how fast that individual fish grows...

If it were a fast growing fish, i would prefer to get it really young and watch it grow...

If it was a really slow growing fish, then i may consider getting a teen or adult...

Agree. Trust me if i could afford a 10" dat i would rather get this fish big. My 4" has grown 1/2" in months.. Aarrrrgghh they grow slow! But i would raise an amphilophus over say a frontosa any day.

Like green spotted puffers, I used to have two in a marine tank but over a year it hardly grew at all

I like to start small and then grow them out like most of you guys. But I also enjoy mixing killers together and see if they can cohabitat.
