Came home tonight from work and was getting ready to watch the bachelor with the wife (I know, not very manly). I was looking at my rays trying to motivate myself to feed them when I noticed my male aparicio had a stinger stuck in his disk!!!! He was the only one in there with double stingers. So he had to of shed it and then swam over it and got it stuck. It was in the corner of his mouth. I knew I had to do something. So I took him out of the tank, put on a thick chemical resistant glove, grabbed him by the tail, picked him up, and then pulled the stinger out. I took pics of the whole procedure. He is now back in the tank. I added 1 lb per 100 gallons to the tank and turned the lights off. He seems stressed but only time will tell. I did not want to leave the stinger in because if it got pushed in anymore it would of gotten into his organs. Luckily it looks like it missed his gills. The stinger is about 2.5 inches long.

damm..i sure hope he's ok..really a beautiful ray! surprised at how he got impaled by his own barb..

That is what I would call a very unlucky ray. Then again, he is yours and therefor, actually, lucky! Lucky you were brave and able enough to remove the spine.

It was almost as if he was "dared" by a tankmate, you know "I double-dog-dare you to bite it!"

Wow! Crazy! Hope it all goes well from here on out... Guess I'll be making sure shed stingers are removed ASAP from now on. I bet that whole situation was an unhappy handfull...

Thats crazy. Glad you got to it ...as Im sure you are as well.

He seems to be doing really well. I fed the other rays a couple of minutes ago and he actually ate more then any other ray. I know I am not out of the woods yet. There is always a chance for infection so I will keep a close eye on him.

Proves how important it is to actually sit down and observe their behavior.
Nice catch. Like gangster stated, almost looks as he was asking for help or
saying hey look here. Hope everything works out.

No doubt, if he would of not come to the front of the tank I would of never saw it. He is not a big swimmer and stays on the bottom all the time. This is really the first time he has lifted his disk up onto the side of the tank or atleast the first time I have seen it. I noticed my smaller marble had a scratch on her back about an inch long. I bet he topped her and drug the stinger across her back.

dang i always say "oh ill get it out later" when i know that this can happen...

i better stay on my toes about getting them out.

glad to hear hes doing good. alot of these rays are very lucky to have such great owners. ;)
