It could be working because, maybe they all grew up together, they're all the same sex and there isn't enough room to establish a terratory. I wouldn't do it, but that is how it could be working.
You know, I believe a fish should have plenty of room to swim, but videos like this make you curious if that is entirely true. You here about massacres happening in 600 gallon tanks, and you look at a tank like this with 3 Beautiful and healthy devils in there. No nipped fins, great body shape and big nuchal humps. Do we over estimate the amount of space a fish requires? As cichlid owners we all know that it doesn't matter the size of the tank, if you get a "killer", they will be a "killer" no matter the size of the tank.
true, to a point. A few weeks ago, my daughter and I stopped by Petsmart to pick up some dog food, and while stopping by the fish dept she spotted a rather larger Albino Zebra(mbuna) wrecking havoc in a display tank. Just terrorizing all the fish in there. She wanted the fish and the woman in the fish dept knew we had a 135 malawi setup, so she asked us to take it. Reluctantly, we did under the premise that if it was too aggressive, he would be returned.........he couldn't be a nicer fish in the 6 footer with space. Calm as could be and although larger than most of his tank mates, he is far from the killer we witnessed in the store
On the flip side, I tried introducing what seemed to be a very peaceful jag to my large display that has tons of space and it was armageddon within several days.....
You just never know how cichlids will behave......
That's my point on the 3 Devils. Though they are seemingly peaceful, there was a bit of aggression between 2 of the 3 at one point. There could come a moment one snaps and all hell breaks loose. I don't agree with putting large fish in small tanks. It's like keeping a big dog in a cage just big enough for it.
