how far from wall do you have your tanks setup?

I think how far you place the tank from the wall depends on a couple of factors.

If you have wall to wall carpet, you need to stay away from the carpet tack strip approximately an inch.

If you have canister filters, allow at least twice the diameter of the tubing and any quick disconnects that would be back there.

If you want to add a Hang On Back filter or may in the future, that dimension needs to be taken into consideration.

I have been leaving about 4 1/4 inches between the back of the stand & the wall. This allows clearance for an AC110 to be easily removed for servicing.

I can also still get the vacuum cleaner nozzle behind the stand to clean and my cats can get through without getting stuck.

I have my 150g actually about 7-8" out, I like to have easy access to my XP3 tubes, and I have an AC110 on there too. given that my tank is tall, I wanted easy access all the way around.

The main advantage of a solid back is to reduce heat lose from sump and filters. However you run the risk of rot due to moisture if you have sump.

5" on the 90 leaves my plenty of room... AC110's need quite a bit of space plus I got a ton of plumbing from canisters , UV , and soon to come algae scrubber etc.

My 55 is about 3" off the wall

6 inches sounds good. i may want to add both my emperor 400's. you can never over filter.

but it looks so much nicer close to the wall.

about 4", enough room for the FX5/mag350 tubes and also enough to stick the vac tube back there (im a nazi when it comes to cleaning). No back on my stand.
