This is strictly for informational purposes--I'm not thinking of purchasing an Arapaima; but I was wondering how fast they grow?

When I was in Singapore I saw babies for sale in 40 gallon tanks. What is the rate which they outgrow tanks? The same place had some at about 5 feet in an outdoor pond which I would estimate at about 10' x 10'. They sold me some fish to feed to the 5 footers--it was fun!

I was just curious how quickly a baby Arapaima would outgrow say a 8' x 2' tank? How about those 5 footers in the 10' x 10'?

Thanks!

wrong section. but i think they would grow atleast 12 inches in the first year.

the ones at my lfs were 5 inchers when i first saw them 4 months ago. as of last saturday, they were around 8-10 inchers

They're not a sellable item due to the size they reach - I'd only even consider one with big pond or private lake or something similar.

to be arowana or not to be....that is the question

The fish store near me has one that is 2 years old... he's 5 feet long! He jumped through their wall tank and they had to put him in the in-store pond with their giant koi. They have 2 more.. also two year olds but they are about 2.5 - 3 feet long.

most seem to get 4-5' at 2 years old.

Arapaima are osteoglossiformes. So are arowana.

Since there is no forum for the arapaimas...I would say that this was an okay place for this post.
