How great are EHEIM 2028? Anyone use them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only thing that bothers me about eheim, and believe me, I'm being extremely nit-picky here...is that damn green tubing. It is hideous. I've never kept any of the regular eheim canisters but I do have a 2229 that's been running for a solid 10 years with no leaks and it's so quiet that you have to watch it to make sure its working.

but that green tubing......

ryansmith83, it is possible that the sealing ring for the canister needs to be replaced. I replaced mine & the problem was fixed. I compared the old & new one, and the old one was definitely 'thinner' from being compressed. Have you pinpointed the exact spot the water is leaking from?

hahahahaha... u know. i didnt notice the issue until u mentioned it.. That green thing is kinda wierd.. I was hopping maybe black or even blue.. And i'm surprised that for almost 20 years.. they haven't changed it at all.. their products is still very much green.. but their logo is red....

OP, I had leak issues until I figured out the following: The little short tube that connects the motor head to the top basket needs to be inserted into the motor head first. Push it in all the way. It will engage the basket when assembled. If you leave it sticking up from the basket when you assemble, it may not go up inside the motor head, and that will cause too much pressure at the top inside, and it leaks. Since I started doing it this way, no leaks for several years. Could this be your issue?

Great canisters but like others say ... the o-rings in the primer may leak. Mine leaked from day one. I have had to replace the o-rings twice in both of my 2028's over the past 8 years. They have been excellent filters other than that for me.

I've had a 2026 and 2028 for about 7 years. they both have leaking problems, especially at servicing, but then it goes away after a couple of days.
1) the large o-ring between the motor housing and the basket holding tank needs replacing every 2-3 years. that solved most of the problem.
2) get a small container of plumber's silicone grease. liberally coat all o-rings after servicing - the main gasket, where the double-taps fit into the motor housing, and aroung the priming mechanism. silicone is kinder to rubber than vaseline. this is per tech support at eheim.
3) often water will leak out from where the wire exits the motor housing. this is the tough one. i think the o-ring inside the priming mechanism needs to be replaced (i've never done it, but i think i'll have to. you should be able to find a kit online.
4) i've had a plastic tray under each canister to catch the leaks. at first i had a disposable ladagna tin, but my brackish water corroded a hole right through it!
5) i first noticed the problem when the power went out. test the filter by unplugging while it's still full and attached, and check for leaks.

It's a great filter, but the leaks are really frustrating. i expect better from eheim. hope this helps.

I've had a few 2028's over the years without any issues. I've got none operating now as they have been replaced with Pro3's which are even better.

ANYONE ELSE!!!! PLZ NEED MORE INSITE!
Hey Guys,
I had purchased a Eheim canister 2217 filter a couple of months ago. I have the following substrates:
At the bottom the ceramic rings, then a blue coarse pad, then the zeolite stones and about 10 bio balls, then another blue coarse pad and finally the fine white pad.
I have been so ignorant that I have been cleaning the filter every 2 to 3 weeks in tap water.
After reading posts on this site I realise I should not clean the filter for atleast 3 months. Also I should clean using aquarium water. What are the other things I need to keep in mind while cleaning the filter. What is the bio media? What should remain in water while cleaning?
Can anyone here please give me detailed instructions on how to maintain the filter please.
Thanks and cheers
Rajesh
