I am helping a guy setup a display pond at work thats about 100 gallons. I thought that if it was filtered with an XP3 or something equivelent that the carbon could help reduce the risk posed to the fish> (kids are going to throw coins in no matter what). I think they just want some goldfish of some sort in there. What are other fish that could work well in a small pond like that? keep in mind this is in a very public place....any other advice would be great! thanks in advance.

why not dunk some feeders like platies in there, they're profilic and hardy...

Howdy,

The most dangerous component about coins is probably copper. That should not harm fish at all at the concentrations reached with coins. As a matter of fact, my grandfather's pond was an old 100 gal copper kettle from an industrial kitchen, just dug into the ground. His goldfish lived long and happily. Just don't expect any invertebrates to thrive, and plants might also have a hard time.

I heard that copper in low concentrations is not bad, but with higher content, it will effect the coating of the fish and cause skin and eye problems.

Cool  Just wanted a few more oppinions on it:) Thanks

Here is one thing to remember....The coins that are made today really have hardley any copper in them....the only way I would see coins causing a problem, is if the fish ingest them...I have seen lots of public ponds, and they usually have lots of coins in them....but the fish are usually safe, if they don't eat them!
