I take no chances..I hate nipped fins...If a single lip lock happens, I pull the fish. Often times, it helps you find the instigator...If the problem starter can be removed and temporarily placed somewhere else, I try again..That has worked for me. If the fish is dirt cheap, sadly, I let it go longer....I'll admit to that.

If there is little damage, I wait two days for chasing to stop. If there is significant damage, I remove the fish entirely, and always have a backup plan.

If the aggression is consistent with no breaks in between, then I will separate them fast. I'll throw in the towel early before one of them gets injured badly.

For me it depends on species, size differences, extra tank space, time, and of course cost. Usually they will figure it out. Keep plenty of hiding spots, keep them well fed..let them do their thing.

usually if the damage isn't too great I'll separate the aggressor on the other side of the eggcrate then hope the new fish establishes its place in the hierarchy while the aggressor is in solitary confinement.

I guess its eventually up to the owners comfortability level...

Guess I need to just keep telling myself that the torn fins, etc. will heal up eventually.

Thou like I said I hate doing it!!!!

i really hate doing that, when i had my devils, tica my male, his fins were perfect, and it scared the hell outa me to put him in with the female, but they spwaned and never really "tore" each other up, of course they were in a 220 and had planty of space.

if they just dont like each other like whenever they swim by it ends up in being nipped ill give it more time. The issue is when theres on aggressor that just wants the new fish dead. Like in my tank i have an aggressor that is a bully o anything that swims by its hole but she'll nip here and there but nothing enough to put up a divider or anything. My fishes fins heal remarkably fast and well for whatever reaon in that tank. :)

and what kind of fish is losing tha much value with every nip? :screwy:

It entirely depends on the level of aggression. When i introduce new fish i always move around the decor and provide plenty of hiding spots. If the new fish is constantly being harrassed and beat on then it probably won't work. One to two hours is enough time to tell.

I too cannot stand to see the new fish getting chased around, I just had to get rid of a smaller gt because my male festae had it out for that fish bad.

My uncle waits a few hours usally i think i would to :D mind you he is lazy got this one fish that acctacks everything i wonder if he has got rid of it yet sold it nice fish just wants to kill everything :nilly:
