I wanted to say a few days, but I choose weeks. Sometimes it takes that long for dominance to be established. Of course it depends, you have to watch and assess the damage. If it looks very serious then take the fish out. Some fish will chase and nip at the other fish for days or weeks. But if its a case of the fish being thrashed to the point of death, then you know its not gonna work.

days seems to be winning!!!!

I'm a believer in tough love. I didn't get the insane mix of different temperaments and sizes of fishes I have in my 240 by freaking out every time I saw a nipped fin. They sort it out eventually. From the 10 inch Flowerhorn to the 4 inch Geo. They all know whatsup.
Here's the list;
-Flowerhorn
-Dovii
-Uaru
-Geo
-Chocolate
-Paratroplus
-Polini
-Zonatus
-w/c red head severum
-indo dat
-thin bar dat
-salvini
-royal pleco
-reg. pleco
-2 synodontus
-nicarguense

Nice combo....no deaths hu?

I have multiple tanks running so if there is any agro in one tank it goes to the next usually I'll have atleast 1 tank empty tho. Then I'll power feed as one of the other members mentioned till he gets big enough.

No deaths from agro (At least not in the last year or so). Aside form the flagtail I put in there that was WAY too small to be in there to begin with. It was my falt on that one. He was eaten whole. The most exspensive feeder I'v ever bought:irked:. And my EBJD died last week. :( Not from agro though. He just all of a sudden keeled over. He was one of my oldest fish.
My Flowerhorn used to kill alot of fish back in the day. They'd be fine then one day he would deside that that one fish had to go and he would just rip them to peices before I could even notice. But he has settled down since then. He just chaces everyone around until he gets tired. Then he's fine. He's too big and there is way too much driftwood/plants for him to do any long term chacing for just one fish.

i agree though my hubby hates me for ragging on him but he puts up a divider everyday it seems. i told him if he keeps it up the 125g is going in a place wher eit can be seen cuase a tank full of white beautiful egg crate is an eye sore! :irked:

I have had nipping in my tanks multipe times, but i did nothing about it if its just nipped here and there, i just add some salt for recovery and they are back to normal. Like camshaft i have stocking that would normally be adivsed against for aggression but ive never had aggression deaths. There are some situation though where i wouldnt push my luck like puting a small fish with big cichlids and then HOPING they dotn get eaten....i dont just leave a litte guy running for his life in there.

when they are getting torn fins then to me that is serious.. and should be closely observed and probably separated in a few hour time frame if things do not immediatly improve... if chasing one another i give that time... unless i see one obviously very stressed then that will probably only end in a disaster... if you do not intervene soon... but just because this situation is present once you separate you can then try again in a week or two..it may not be a problem the second time around... funny seems like everything is timing...

I say depending one the aggro depends on how long you make them wait. If someone has teeth marks down there back or they are trying to drown each other it's a little different. and if they are expensive fish I would wait less.
