if it needs the rock to hold it down, that means it is not water logged. if it is not yet waterlogged, all the tannins are just waiting for the water to get to it before they start tea bagging your tank. enjoy.hollyone42o;1015571; said:

I put two big pieces of driftwood in my 135 about 5 months ago and I still get that black water look if I go more than a week without a water change. I've heard boiling the wood can help remove tannins.
Carbon and water changes are the typical methods of removing tannins after the woods in the water but ozone also helps. Not really worth getting ozone unless you already use it though.
I've used cork bark before as I didnt want to go through the tannin avoiding process but I've also bought some of this stuff:

It's pre soaked and no staining occured at all. There's pictures in my gallery showing the water after a couple of weeks showing no detectable staining.

i have been soaking 2 XXL pieces of bogwood for a little over a year now and they are still leaching tannins...think i got a few more years left of the tea bag effect...doh
I had that with my 120 gal for 3 months until i put a xp3 on and used there bio-chem zorb stuff in it and it only took about an hour and my tank is crystal clear. and still is.
The problem clearing the tannins from water is not so much getting rid of those floating around in the water column but stopping your wood continually producing more.
If you waited until your wood had finished releasing all it was going to you could simply fix the problem with a few water changes.
Some wood that has already been soaked may only release a little upon immediate immersion and in which case you could probably wait a week and then run chemical filtration to remove them all in a couple of hours.
However, it's important to remember that chemical filtration only acts on the water passing through, not directly on the wood itself, so running chemical filtration to remove tannins does work but you need to continually run the chemical filtration until the wood stops releasing tannins.

mopani wood leaches far less than standard bogwood...if you cant handle the tannins on bogwood try mopani (not sure on spelling)
