How Long Have You Been Fishkeeping...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been keeping fish now for a whole 7 months? ... So very very new to all of this with still the world to learn and most certainly many more mistakes to be made.

Like above, I don't think I would know even a drop to what I know now without MFK. Turned into an addiction as I think I am on pretty much all day (even while I'm at work) and as much as possible during the weekends.

I've only been in this hobby for 46 years so, I'll never know all I need to know. And, while I've had success with certain species, I don't consider myself an "expert" by any means. Hence, my fishkeeping IQ is around Gump level.
i now have to lower my IQ fishkeeping score...you are my idol... your too modest..

Remember-"Expert" is not a protected title!
Been in the hobby for 2 years now and passed the 1000L mark this month.
I'm have become a Monsterfishkeeper, A Plecofanatic and an Oscarfishlover.
I learned a lot in those 2 years but I can never know enough!

I've been at it for 16 years. This hobby always seems to be evolving so I'm always learning. I love Knives, but more particularly, Notopteridae. It's interesting to find a lot of "care sheets" and recipes on them, but not too much on the scientific level. I wouldn't say I'm an expert by any means. I started with Bettas, Guppies, and Mollies. Fell head over heel for Catfish and then later on Cichla, but Knives have always had me since the first time I saw a large Clown Knife at 8 years old.

I've been keeping fish a little more than a year now. We always had tanks when I was growing up but I knew nothing about maintaining it, or the fish/ what the eat, how big they get, etc..
I think I know quite a bit about fish and diseases, but I want to learn more, especially about how to DIY and making your own filters and all that good stuff.
Id say my fish IQ is around 3 or 4 compared to people on here, but my friends seem to think I know alot about fish. and like other people have said I definately wouldnt know what i know without MFK.com

Got my first tank about 6 years ago, a 10g that I put an oscar in before it cycled (R.I.P. little guy). Ignorance is...expensive  I can't even remember what I had it in after that...I don't think it was set up for long because I'm pretty sure I moved not too long after that.

Once I moved I was already obsessed with the new hobby and did some research / etc to get a better idea of what I was doing. Wasn't long before I bought and setup a new 6ft 125g :D

After browsing this site for the past few months I've definately learned alot, and know I still have much to learn.

I've had fish for about 25 years, floundering around on secondhand LFS knowelage and some obscure old books. I was just randomly throwing anything into tanks together. then in '92 it all changed when my granny (RIP) gave me 2 subscriptions to PFK and another fish mag. soon after that the internet came along. I remember some of the early German sites had good fish profiles. (of course it was before google translate so all i could really figure out was temps and tankmates by the pics provided) I am continually resaerching and (i hope) learning. I've always had fresh water SA/CA set-ups, and a few african set-ups over the years, I'm currently playing with an asian bio-type. some day maybe i'll venture into salt water but no hurry. My fish IQ... I guess only my fish can answer that question.

off and on for about 20yrs, im 26, so yeah i started young :)

I started keeping fish in 2003. I try to learn as much as possible about the fish I keep, but I know there is tons of stuff that I don't know :(
My fish IQ is pretty good compared to non-fishkeepers, but when compared to avid fishkeepers my IQ is pretty low :)
