How Long Have You Been Fishkeeping...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been keeping fish since around 1980, but I was out for maybe 15 years or so starting in 1990. My fishkeeping IQ is maybe 4-5, I can keep the common species, I've bred some of the commoner fish, but I've never dipped into marine or kept any of the more advanced FW stuff like discus or rays (yet).

I can't remember not having fish, i'm 26 now and must have had them for about 24 of those years. There was always a tiny cold water tank with goldfish in in mine and my brothers room when we were young, moved onto ponds and then koi while i was at school. Dug out one of the old small tanks after i finished school and started working away and got some small goldfish again (as well as still having a 5,000gal koi pond at my folks place) then moved onto tropical fish when i saw how large some of them could get and been on those for the last 9 years now. Only really started learning anything useful (and making my wallet much lighter) since finding mfk last year and getting an unhealthy addiction for large catfish, but still not got my fish IQ above 0! my fish teach me something new everyday.

Off and on since 1994, going strong since 2002. Still learning. Keep mostly CA/SA Cichlids, mainly species that can live in my tanks for lifetime, trying to avoid the larger species... for now heh
i like that life time prospect... me too..

this summer (end of june) will be two years that i have been in fish keeping. I'm more into freshwater (south american) fish... i have tried saltwater but got bored of it (of course that was only a 10 gal nano tank)... i have alot to learn especially in saltwater fish... most south american fish if you show me a picture i can give you a common name, but there will always be fish in south america that i have no clue what they are...

how's that Liz? :D
thats great BIGfishrcool:D

I constantly learn new things, it's what keeps the hobby interesting.

I've been keeping fish for 17 years now, or since I was 9. I went a little bit here and there with no tanks but I've almost always had at least one tank running or more. Then last year is when I got out of race cars and a lot more serious about the fish hobby. Amazing how I thought I was doing everything right in the past, boy was I wrong. I've learned 1000x more in the last year than I did in my first 16 years of fish keeping. Amazing how easy it is to learn when you enjoy something and apply yourself.
that is so true... and when you share it with other monsterfishkeepers its even better...

Been keeping fish now for a whole 7 months? ... So very very new to all of this with still the world to learn and most certainly many more mistakes to be made.

Like above, I don't think I would know even a drop to what I know now without MFK. Turned into an addiction as I think I am on pretty much all day (even while I'm at work) and as much as possible during the weekends.
you have learned soooo much in such a short time... doing great!
