How Long Have You Had Your P's?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1 Rhom for 14.5 years. July will be 15 years.

Started back in 1999. I had 3 rhoms, 8 caribe and 1 scapularis. Most I only held onto for about 1 year. The first rhom I bought that started my craze is the one I have held onto. Kept him from about 2.5in to ~10in now.

Woww..14+ years?? Can you take pics??

Might be mine

I've only owned one Serrasalmus rhombeus which I bought it in 1982 and it has been 32 years in my tanks this year.

Cost $50 and was 5.1cm. It never grew fast or large and only measures 28 to 30 cm now.

Kept in a variety of tanks over the years and rotating between 450 litre and 680 litre tanks every 2 to 3 years when I do a complete tank tear down.

I am curious to know what you have been feeding him, your general maintenance schedule, filter setup, and any other useful info. I think is amazing you have a 32 year old fish. Thanks.

arapaimag - You are who I was talking about. Just did not want to name names :)

Even at 30cm that is a decent size. I have yet to find anyone that has been able to grow a rhom beyond 32cm in an aquarium. My guy has gone from 2.5in to about 10in in 15 years. I hope to get to the 12in mark in the next 4-5 years but we will see. Hopefully when I move to a house I can get him a large tank to himself. My next project will be getting my hands on a manueli :)

Over the years it's food has changed as availability has.

At present it gets a variety of food but generally only one or two of the following per week.

smelt, silversides, mackerel, herring, lake trout, tilapia, market shrimp. In the past boiled liver, chicken and other fish.

I keep a shoal of guppies and sometimes swordtails in all my piranha tanks So it might eat some of the flake & pellets fed to the smaller fish.

In this ones tank I also have bristlenose plecos and 4 goldfish (I breed all of the live fish that are in with my piranhas) but no swordtails. The goldfish are seldom eaten and replaced with smaller ones every few months.

I use undergravel filters in all of my piranha tanks.

When it shows signs of not eating I stop feeding.

Sometimes this can go on for 2 weeks to a month. Nzafi has experienced this happening sometimes with his rhom also.

Water changes 35% between 2 to 4 weeks.

nzafi, great story. It's amazing how Shaka survived through H Sandy, congratulations man. What a keeper.

Thanks. Do you just use under-gravel filters or anything else to supplement? What size tank do you have him in?
