How long until you get bored?

As a follow on from the above how about African tiger fish? One of my dream fish and make snakeheads look down right peaceful.
They are awesome! Need to fish for some one day, wrong end of the country unfortunately

That is probably the nicest looking piece of driftwood that I have ever seen.

I've had fish on my own for about 3yrs. I started with an ornamental pond and then started up a little tank in the house.
I too always want to do something different. Worst part is I get attached to the fish I have, so I keep adding more to my collection. I've only ever gotten rid of two fish in the past three years.
I still have my original koi, shubunkins, and fantails I started with.

Then I started keeping tropicals last summer. I love my stock but something was missing....
Plants. I love plants and all the snails and little critters that hid in them. It makes watching the tank so interesting.
Now I want to heavily plant my 10gal and was thinking of having some shrimp and guppies. Raised for enjoyment and feeders.

Op- That tank is amazing! And that driftwood is perfection!
I completely get wanting to change things up. When I look at the current picture I see what I saw about my tank.... it needs plants. Lol

Plants are life!

Welcome back. I remember when you set up your tank...and also your visit to the west coast. I had wondered what happened to you. Do you still have your vizsla?

I don't much get bored with my fish as they are all in my basement and I don't see them on a constant basis.Perhaps if they were on the main floor I might get that feeling at some point.I do have times when I don't feel like going down there to tend to them but I overcome that pretty quickly.

This is the first time since I have been in the hobby that I have kept the same fish for longer than 6 months. But now with my GT I have no desire to re-home him or try something else. He is my pet, I get very attached and hope to have him for his entire life. There is also something special about growing them out from such a young age and watching them develop into big monster fish.

I started keeping cichlids in the late 1950s, my longest continuously set up tank was a 150 gal started in the mid 80s until 2 years ago when I moved to Panama. I kept one pair of haitiensus and their spawns in it for about 5 years, and Madagascan Paretroplus for another 5.
Fish die, and as new fish become available things evolve.
Evolving filtration technology has always kept me very interested and busy.
I've built DIY fractionation units, used plenums, fluidized beds, and added planted sumps in between the existing tanks.
Went back to school in the 80s for microbiology and chemistry mostly because of the fish keeping, ended up a chemist/microbiologist in a drinking water treatment plant, giving me access to new technology for water testing, can't say I ever got bored.
Moved to Panama partially because I'm interested in the cichlids here.

Hendre Hendre Yeah, I didn't realize it till a few months back that a big part of keeping fish was how much I love plants with them. I keep so many gardens you would think my love for plants would have been more obvious to me. HahaXD

Many years ago when i first got into the hobby i used to keep the bog standard little community type fish. The lifespan of these little fish is generally short so i always had quite a fast turnover of fish. This was fine because it enabled me to try different fish which always kept things interesting, but this never allowed me to get attached to any fish simply because they weren't living for years and years and years. Then i had a long break from the hobby. When i returned a couple of years ago i decided to get fish which were long lived. This is great if you want to get attached to your fish and watch them
grow from tiddlers into old monsters but not so good if you soon get bored and want to change everything round every couple of years. My look on it now is simple. If i get itchy feet then tough, i've made my bed with my choice of long lived fish and i will just have to sleep in that bed, like it or lump it, haha. Happily, i'm glad to report that all the long lived tiddlers i bought a couple of years ago are now quite big tiddlers with still many more years in them, hopefully, and even more happy to report that i'm not bored!
