How long will my RTC survive in a 10 gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
get it back to the LFS is just like run away from his responsibility, most of people I see buying a 10'' RTC after it being brought back to the LFS don't even have a 100 gallon tank!
for the OP, if you have enough space indoor and money to buy a stock tank, there is a website that sell 610 G stock tank for less than $300 ($270 if I'm remember correctly) with free shipping that you can get a stock tank from!

I hear what you are saying. But considering it is in a 10 gallon, if he isn't able to get that stock tank quick, I don't see the fish living for very much longer. Thirteen inches of RTC is a whole lot of fish for a 10 gallon.

I always cringe anytime I see RTCs, Pimas, Tiger shovel Nose (name any cat that gets huge) in a fish store. The people that have the knowledge and resources to properly care for them probably know how to special order them. I know it's just business, but I think it's irresponsible for shops to sell these monsters to any kid that has $40.

I agree with Alex...

Sounds like you failed to research the fish BEFORE you bought him! It's pretty easy to find out info on the RTC! Furthermore, you won't get $50 for him... You'll be lucky if your LFS offers you a decent amount of store credit. Either way, you made a bad buying decision and now you need to accept that you are going to take a loss financially. Besides, there's no way you paid 50 bucks for him in the first place...unless you got totally ripped off. Find him a good home regardless of whether you make money off of him or not. That fish deserves better than what you can offer him right now. From here on out though, you should probably stay away from the big cats...there are plenty of smaller cats out there that are fun to watch, won't outgrow your tank, or eat their tank mates.

sold the rtc for 15 bucks to pet store. the move was only temporary. now hes in a 20 gal high. not much of an improvement.

Too late for advice now, I was going to suggest a walmart rubbermaid for the smaller fish and keep the RTC in the 180

You weren't really planning on keeping a RTC in a 180 tank were you?

i just brought it to the pet store. they put it in a 20 gallon high. i was hoping to give him to a good home but just couldnt keep it anymore. fish is gone now
