I posted elsewhere about getting a new JD last Tues and having to remove my yet smaller GT because my GT was harassing my JD and picking on him. I called the store of which I bought my JD firstly to see if I could exchange him but they suggested I left my GT out of the tank for a week to let my JD find some of his own territory.

Well I put my GT back in this arvo and all that has gone on since is chasing, harrasing, and more chasing. They occassionally have a rest. There was a small amount of lip locking in the first 10 minutes but that has past. There is not yet any cuts or marks on either of them.

Just want to know how long will this go on and if it will ever end? Will it be safe for me to turn the lights out on them tonight and go to bed?

Sorry about the long post.

First off, Did you change around the decor whilst the GT was out of the tank? If not this is crucial
And if theres no damage, then there shouldnt be much to worry about

I did change it round a little but looking at it now maybe not as much as I could've. Kinda still resembles the same way it was in the first place. I just removed a few caves and thinned out the plants a lot. Oh what to do

I can see a sleepless night coming up

I think it will be ok, once one of them establishes its dominant you will see less fighting. You can try adding some dither fish to give them something else to chase. As long as you dont see serious attacks and wounds it will be fine.

Cichlids normally chase and nip at eachother, this is just how they socialize. Two males often will battle eachother over dominance.

yeah i have been waiting for my friend to bring half dozen black widows up tonight and i was going to put them in there. How exactly do dither fish work tho? I had never heard of them till a couple of days ago on here.

This is the best forum ever. I cannot get off it. LOL

Small dithers like Tetra are a waste of time when it comes to spreading aggression in my experience. When Cichlids dislike eachother, they dislike eachother, not the small fish swimming around. All you're going to end up with is six maimed or eaten Black Widow Tetra.

They'll be fine provided neither one of them decides it can't fight the other. Fighting isn't the real problem, it's when the dominant of the two beats the other into submission constantly.

How long will they fight? However long a piece of string is.

Ok, Well I have got some fish here in another tank, gourami's, angel. Should I stick them in there? I was only gonna give them to a friend anyway LOL
