after they are fed prepared foods for long enough they treat it almost the same as a hunt. mine are extremely aggressive towards raw shrimp. to each his own i guess.

how big are the shrimps you feed your gars? doesnt their exoskels get stuck or do damage on the gar? im planning to give my gar diets like you guys do. help? hehe!

My gar seems to do fine with the f/d krill, when I feed market shrimp I shell them just in case. I generally keep the pieces less than 1", my gar could probably handle bigger but I don't see the need to make him choke down huge pieces of shrimp. Pluse "bite sized" pieces make less mess in the tank.

you can attempt keeping then in a large(maybe around 6' by 3' wide minumum) and watch as the gator out grows first the aro, eating it, and then the tank itself. these gars just dont do well in home aquariums:)

they dont do well in the wrong home aquariums...in the correct aquarium w/ the correct care taker, they can be kept perfectly fine.

the size of the shrimp depend on the size of the gar they are being fed to. my gar are all between 16-18 inches now and they have no problem swallowing whole shrimp. the exo has never been an issue for any of my gar.

p.s. richard, collecting baseball cards is also a huge hobby of mine...just putting that out there. ; )

do i know that? i am 100% confident that if i had the space and the cash to have a setup large enough, i would do perfectly fine with one. there are many people who are capable of keeping them...just because they dont have the money or space required to house one doesnt mean they arent capable.

If I ever get the outdoor pond idea out of my head and into actual reality I will probably attempt to keep a gator gar in it. It would be something like 12' in diameter which would be enough I'd think. Plan B is probably a group of florida gar with maybe some other natives, but the idea of a big gator is really intriguing. I do think xander has a point though, in that gators are largely unsuitable for the home environment, in the same way that things like pacu, aros, RTC, pimas etc are...that being there are exponentially more animals sold than there are people with aquaria suitable for them.

I've also been big on baseball cards and autographs for awhile. I'm kind of out of it now and 99% of my collection is still up north though.

i love when people think just because they cant house them...nobody can house them.
