im not talking about the zoo animals. ever watch the show "GROWING UP" on animal planet? those were the ones i was talking about.:D:D

this lions part is getting out of hand, but just to make this point clear(as it has greatly to do with fish too) a whole population shouldn't be judged based on it's "exceptions"..as karajo said, think of what fish you want and focus on it, when you get better you could try tweaking the rules and taking calculated risks, like demjor mixing a pacu w his gars, most ppl said it shouldnt be done, but he pulled it off. but when the idea is ridiculous in the first place...then you shouldn't be thinking of ways to make it work, cause it wont.

get it? well i think what i said made sense anyways....

people come on here, asking for advice...GOOD
then they go out and do waht they were warned not to do...BAD

it has happened in the past. someone wanted to get pacu and put with his gar. everyone warned him against it, especially since he had a tiny little tank. He went out and got two anyway...a few weeks later he was trying to give them away to a free home b/c they were nipping fins and growing too fast...exactly what everyone told him would happen. This is a great site to learn from. A lot of people have experience that they have found through making the same mistakes. Every fish is different, but when it comes to the nature of the fish there is no changing it.

I had a fish for almost a year that lived with my gar. One night, he swam past one of the gar and out of instinct, the gar struck at him. He popped his eye....and from there, all of the other fish saw it was injured. That morning, all that was left was about an inch of its body. It happens. it can work, but maybe not forever.

Again, I would work on getting rid of some of your fish to lighten your load and focus on a few compatible ones. This entire thread has come down to this point so I see no more reason for debate.

awww sad story specially the eye popped thing. i wanna keep the gar. what fish would be compatible with it?

yeah it did. im thinking of keeping the gar here in my place and sending the others to province in our farm and have their own tank that they can live at. any ideas what i can put with the gar? its an alligator BTW

bichirs, african arowanas, other gars, lungfishes(excluding african lungs), aros might work(more often than not imo), and other big, slow moving not too aggressive fish.

didn't see the alligator part..well the general rule of thumb is aside from other gator gars and ridiculously large fish, nothing that you'd mind losing. gators generally kill everything in the same tank. maybe not now, but they might just decide to. there was this guy who had a 13" gator in a comm tank, when one day after a month or so it tried to eat his 14" albino sturgeon. it didn't survive...i'd suggest you lose the gator gar and work on getting smaller gars. spotted, florida and tropical gars are the best starters, although you might wanna try for a longnose if you have the tank space.

imo=in my opinion

as long as the silver has a good bit of size on him, you could try it i guess. but gars hate silvery fish. i think demjor's having a hard time adding his 18" silver aro with his 18" and 16" gars. but aside from demjor i there are quite a few who managed to do it. again, individual fish are different...

they have been together since when the silver was 6" and the gar was 5" now the silver is 13" and the gar is 14"

what about the shovel nose?

yohan-

what size tank do you currently have and when are you getting your much larger tank? this is the only question that needs answered. even if we do answer youre questions (which we have) you are going to do whatever you want anyway. people like you have a complete disregard for the fish they keep.
