How many convicts?

That's pretty cool your lfs will give you $20 for 50 fry. Around my area most stores charge 99 cents a piece and some even give them away for free. Unless you go to petsmart or petco that is they charge like 2 bucks.

I breed cons as well and I get lucky if I can give my fry away.
 
well, good for you then . . . and a 20G tank is fine for a pair of cons, plenty of room
 
Bare in mind mine bred at 1", more than 50 babys.

So i got rid of the male, and the little hussy bred with my adult 6" Sajica
 
I only say that a 20gal is small because I use a 30gal as a grow out tank for my small cichlids. I have had many convicts before and they all outgrew my 30gal fairly quickly. Unless I have some unknown ability to raise large convicts, I still believe that down the line you will need something larger than a 20. I'm not saying go out and by a 55 or 90gal tank. The larger my convicts grew the stronger their fry were. That's just my personal experience with breeding convicts.

this isnt always the case, trust me. im having this problem now....with convicts it seems looks can be very deceiving
 
You only need to get enough cons to ensure you get a male and female. If you have a male and female, they will breed. So get 6, then there is only a 1:32 chance of getting all one sex(If I did my math right), just make sure to re-home those that you don't select to breed from.
 
dude...i bred 2 pairs of cons at the same time in a 10 gal. it worked out fine. i was planning on keeping them there until my tank cycled and they both had babies lol. so its possible
