How many Dovii owners are there??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have one female about 7 inches long and one wild caught male about the same size but not as heavy....and feeding them a mixture of frozen beefheart thawed mixed with amazone pellets and high quality flake food then refrozen seem to be growing pretty quickly

I've got a 13" long male,
Bruce

He's in my 55 gal right now, but that's just untill his 150 tank comes home, which should be by the end of the month... I got him when he was about 11" about 6 months ago, and he's already much fatter than the pic showed when taken...

I really wish i had a better camera to catch all of the blues on him...

Great dovii pictures! It is amazing the bright blue coloration a male dovii can have on his fins. I am sure that your dovii will love the new home in the 150g.

My dovii are all kind of on the spooky side as they get scared pretty easily. They will come out to feed and then dart on back into cover.

Is there a certain stage/size when a dovii understands how tough they really are?

It's always taken Bruce a while to eat, i'm the only one that will not hide and

On another note, i just love the fact that the Wolf Cichlid latin name means "dovelike"

The name Dovii is misleading suggesting a peacful dove.In fact, it comes from Captin John Dow,a collector of fish from the nineteenth century(though why a v has been substituted for a w in the scientific name is unclear) :naughty:

I am raising a 3" male, and now he is close to 4" in a 20gallon long tank. I have kept the dovii w/ only gravel and heater (no decors). I had train the dovii to even eat from my hand and not shy at all. Especially if I approach his tank, he will dart to the front of the tank and wait for the food.
I cant imagine how outgoing it will become once it hits 12" and bigger.

I say, remove all the decors but just the gravel. Placing the tank in a high traffic area will be your best bet also. And it wont be for long before he will be outgoing. :)

Thanks for the advice on trying to make my young dovii a little more social. I have 4 small dovii at work. One of them is pretty social and begs for food. The other three are more reserved, but manage to bounce out for food every once in a while. My jags eat out of my hand, but I have not been able to have a dovii feed from my hand.

It seems as if my Dovii has had a growth spurt within the last 2 weeks,he is nearly 5 inches now(only eating flakes and sometimes Hikari Bio Gold pellets). He has since killed my 4 inch Trimac and a smaller Umbee(that pisses me off!!!)But the funniest thing is,my cousin put his 5 inch Clown knife in my tank(his busted)and it seems as if my Dovii is scared to death of him!!!When the knife comes out of his cave my Dovii races back behind his rock, and wont come out till the knife goes back in his cave, wierd isnt it!?!?

mine was an inch when i got him he is about 3 now he is the smallest in his tank but he dont take **** from noone he in a 55 with other babys quite fun too watch 2 umbiee 1 odo firemouth loves shrimp pellets, guppy's,worm's,alage wafers a fav among all the fish i own crickets when they get bigger eat most anything that fit's in its mouth mine ole girl i got rid of cause of a bad temper ate pinkies
