How Many Fish In A 1000g Pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah blah blah blah to the rest of these posts (no one can never seem to win this argument anyway)

i wouldn't keep koi in a 1000 gallon pond except for maybe one or two tops. my friends grandpa has a bonch in his pond and says keeping so many in a small space isn't worth the extra work and money.
if you like the 'koi' look get shubunkin gf's or something the comets will reach a really good size in a little while and the shub's will get just as big.
i'd stick with the goldfish.

I still wouldn't risk releasing comets into any CA waters. All you need is for a F&W officer to think it's wrong for the money funnel to start flowing. Penalties for releasing non-native species include up to 5 years in prison and up to $250.000.00 in fines...PER INCIDENT. And it doesn't stop there. You also get to be financially responsible for the study of how your release will impact the indigenous fauna and flora AND be financially responsible for any required trapping of your released fish and costs involved in the recovery of the ecosystem. And since CA is one of the states that has banned the use of comets as bait, I wouldn't want to get caught dumping healthy unhooked comets in that state.
Just my 2 cents as a word to the wise.

I am 100% positive that they would never go to this extreme for some comets...

Carp/goldfish havs been introduced (from Europe) into about every body of water in North America. IF there are no carp ,it is because the natives ate them. Also, goldfish have been sold as bait fish (and some have escaped).
Back to the original question ; I have four 20"+/- and one 16" Koi in a 1000 gal. They share it with 500+/- swordtails, platies, zebra danios etc, depending on the season (about 100 smaller fish at this time). I do have a secret technology; a 40ft stream running at about 6 to 800 g/hr. It filters and aerates.

Sounds like I'm overstocked already and if I did it all over again, I would have 4 Koi in my pond as i don't like the look of a bunch of overcrowded fish. I guess to say I'd put my Comets in the local lake dos sound bad but I live in a Planned Community and they're always stocking the man-made lake with fish every year it seems and didn't think the Comets would do any harm. I can easily just sell them in that case.

Just to let you know, that in my state, you get fined $1500 for every comet you are caught releasing into the wild... it screws up the entire natural balance (food cycle)...

Releasing foreign fish is very bad.

"It is hard for a tropical fish enthusiast to not to be impressed by seeing these fish in the snow, but it must be remembered that they are introduced species that had a profound impact on the native fishes of the marsh. The marsh was once the only home of the Banff longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae smithi), which was declared extinct in 1986. It is highly likely that it was competition with the introduced species that led to its extinction."

You don't want some weird man-made-lake fish to go extinct in 40 years do you?

My rule of thumb is 1 Adult koi per 1000G. Of course you can house many more in there for growout. But I;d start moving them once they hit 2ft.
