How many lbs of hardscape can an aquarium bottom support?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Displacement is not related to mass at all. The displacement of water is equal to the volume.

This ^ exactly. That 300+ pound guy displaced his own volume of water when he jumped in. If you had thrown in a rock weighing the same as him, it would have had much less volume (being denser) and would have displaced a lesser amount to match.

Inertia is completely unrelated to any of this.

Excelsior! :)

I was referring to the density of equal mass substances and how much they displace in comparison

ex: a cubic foot of lead vs a cubic foot of cotton

it's all good.

LOL I said nothing about inertia, that's just the first chapter in the series I was talking about. The other chapters are to the right (I think it's 12 or 13)

Dear FINWIN FINWIN I am a bit lost at your usage of wording. But never mind, I am sure you can refill the pool.

Interia, dear jjohnwm jjohnwm , not a good property for an aquarium.

Lol, I could barely sit through that one episode to which you provided a link! You think I was going to watch the whole series??

I could not for the life of me understand why you were bringing inertia into the conversation.

Dear FINWIN FINWIN ...Interia, dear jjohnwm jjohnwm , not a good property for an aquarium.

Oh, I don't know about that. I definitely want my aquarium, which has begun its career "at rest"...to remain at rest!!! 🧐

Aquariums are designed to transfer the weight into the 4 corners of the tank. nearly every mass producing manufacturers tank w/ stand combo has a very tiny gap between the stands long-sided 'support' and the bottom of the tank. If you take a piece of paper and stick it in that gap and run it left or right it will get stopped right before it reaches one of the corners. try it ;)

It is because of this i am able to run my entire 11k gallon facility with no center supports. and believe me, as a full-time 24/7 operating importing & exporting facility I am abusing these tanks on a daily basis more than a home aquarium will probably ever see in a lifetime. I am even known( to customers shock and surprise) stand on the corners of the larger tanks to reach a upper level tank in my facility!

Here is an older video of just one of the rooms in my facility right after it was re-setup when I moved to the current 'new' location in 2019 after these very same tanks were in the original facility since 1995. Mo Devlin (AquaMojo) was kind enough to record a quick vid on one of his visits once I had completed this particular room. note, the lack of center supports even on the large tanks. This is just one of the rooms in my facility and at the time of the video was the only completed room during the move. The tanks are pretty resilient. As long as they are dead set level they typically last forever and can hold a lot a weight.

Welp, just have three fat people sit on the tank. If it doesn't crash to the floor you're good. If it does crash, get another tank and start again. The amount of displacement will be the potential hole in the floor.

What are the largest/longest tanks you have with no center support? Does this work because it's a rack type system?
