How many of u use gravel vac?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The vac where the old water goes back in the tank is kind of like masturbation compared to the real thing, a water change. It is cosmetic, but you are taking out less than 10% of what really needs to be out, compared to a water change. There are many more invisible pollutants, than the stuff you see, so you are basically putting back the pollution, that you should be taking out.

Whie I agree with this I have plecos, they tend to #$%& a lot and I hate the idea of 10%wc's daily when I don't need to.

One of the things daily vacuuming with a water change does, is remove different parasites such as dormant ick cysts that congregate in the substrate. Many parasite cysts are in 0.02-0.05 micron range, so if you are using a vac with a bag, you are simply tossing the cysts back into the water column.
A small daily water change may not be needed, but does many positive things to help the total health of the system.

ive used one but only when i dont have the time to do water changes on all my tanks

I've got the Eheim vac that you put in the OP that I got when I got the lights for my tank. I've got saltwater though and its nice not to have to be changing the water all the time when the params are fine just to get the poop out. Also, the water pressure here sucks and the hose (which needs to be 50 feet long to reach the sink) really doesn't do much to help that side of things. I love my eheim vac. The only complaint I have about it is that I've got aragonite sand in my tank and it will suck up tons of sand if I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing. I hit my tank once a week with it. At least. Its nice to have around.

On a side not, I love your avatar, far2lively! That guys is so cute! I know who he is but can't remember his name....

I can see how those can be more beneficial on SW tanks than FW for the reasons Kelly gave, though I would probably be willing to try one myself it they made them longer, but with a 30" deep tank I haven't found one yet that can reach the bottom without being modified.

And I believe that avatar is a CGI version of Orko from He-Man
