these symptoms are classic pH shock symptoms. sounds like this could be the problem rather than the actual prime itself.

this can happen with water changes where the pH of the new water is different than the existing tank water..

it might be worth double checking your pH of your tank vs your new water just to rule out this possibility.

i totally agree!Sounds like its a ph crash.

It's funny you have brought this up.
My jack dempsey has completely lost his mojo & does the things you have described.
The other fish in the tank are acting fine.

It all started about 3 water changes (weeks) ago.
As soon as the water was almost full he started the described symptoms.
& pirme is the water conditioner I use

I wrote it off as something that would pass but has not.

parameters are...
Ammonia..0ppm
Nitrite...0ppm
Nitrate...20ppm
Ph..7.6
Temp...80° F

As a last piece of info the day it started was the 1st time I ever used Purigen.

I would consider the water suspect over the product. Seriously look at the ingredients of both Amquel and prime, then do some homework. What are the strenghts and weaknesses of each ingredient. I am going to guess that there is something in your water that your fish don't like that amquel neutralizes and prime doesn't. A specific heavy metal from your pipes or a chemical added by the treatment facility......

It is entirely possible that amquel is the best brand for your needs. That is why there are so many brands available. I prefer API water conditioner, but I have nothing against either amquel or prime.

I have used Prime for years w/o seeing such problems, and at times I have even deliberately over-dosed (e.g., for an algae problem, etc.) and not seen any ill effects . . .

the thing to remember too is that in reality, a normal dose of prime is an 'overdose' since they want you to dose for the full volume of the tank rather than just the volume of chlorinated water that you are adding

(which makes no sense other than to get you to use more prime so you buy it faster) but still..

so given that everyone is basically dosing more than they need to begin with and there are no problems, to me it makes it even more unlikely that prime is the culprit here..

I am confident in my observation that prime caused the problems with my fish. Also, because I did the same water change scenario with amquel and the symptoms my fish were showing instantly went away. I will be getting rid of the 4 gallons I have .
