The non union training I went through as an electrician was a total joke. It does not even come close to the training I have got now. You may not see the difference but if you saw what the training was like it might change your opinion.

i have to agree with 74ray. i've repaired countless hack jobs done by scab roofing companies. i don't know if it's the same with all trades of not, but there is definetly a differance with comercial roofing. i'm not bashing all non union contractors by any means, there are some out there that put out quality work, but you have to remember you get what you pay for. the majority of non union roofing contractors that do a comparable job with us don't have much of a price differance.

I've repaired plenty of hack jobs by union contractors. It's pretty sad either way. We are not talking about rocket science.

I'm not really in favor of holding my employer or the general public hostage to secure higher pay than I deserve. It's bad for the economy.

Hold on a second there, Einstein.

The only reason I'm not for unions is because I get paid crap. I started at Kroger at $6.00 and my yearly raises were .15 cents. That's complete bullcrap. I stayed their for almost 3 years plus it was $6 every week for these mysterious union dues.

I work at Petsmart now and started out at 7.50($1.50 more than kroger, and a $1.50 makes a difference) and after a mere 18 months I make $9.50, I am a lead though but that was just another .42C So in my opinion, for my case at least unions do nothing for me. I like kroger and all, but the union did nothing for me, nothing. Maybe I was too young(16 when I started) to reap any benefits, but that's just dumb then.

No offense to anyone who is in a union, just for me it was useless.

When the cost of building is too high, no one builds, and you price yourself out of a job.

I've seen so many GM, Delphi, and Chrysler plants close around here it's ridiculous. The employees that got paid $30 an hour to push a button just could not figure out why they were closing down the plants..........maybe that's why there were pushing a button.

i agree there is a fine line between making good scale, and getting overzealous with what you think you should be paid. i don't want anyone to get me wrong, i'm not saying your an idiot if you work non union, but for me (at least in the area i live) it makes the most financial sense for my trade. anyone who gets up and earns a living day after day has my respect regardless of union affiliation.

ewurm- are you a g.c.?

depends where you live. union carpenters in boston a few years back were making between 40-50 hrly and had lots of work. everyone in the trades has slowed down as of late of course

This town has always had a strong union presence and this my third job with representation.I can see how some employers mistreat their workers and deserve to be dealt with but a lot of the organizations here are just as corrupt and on the take with the crook politicians who run this city.
