Unions only benefit the people that are actually in them.

I wasn't trying to make this a debate, was just curious what kind of percentage of folks on here are union. I've done both and can understand why people would choose either side.

I am part of a union. I am a wastewater treatment plant operator. we have small union, that consists of water operators, wastewater ops, systems ops, millwrights, instrumention tech's and electricians..

we work for regional government.

although I enjoy the benefits of our union (we have a good relationship with our municipality - there is seldom issues) I can understand the resentment of some of the huge unions that abuse their leverage..

we are fairly small - I think 150 members or so, and are nothing compared to these massive unions with thousands of members..

Union.. CWA 9588

and i took a pay cut to work for Verizon (GTE at the time) and have a steady paycheck and benefits, BECAUSE of the union. Verizon doesn't give anything to anyone without a fight.

otherwise i would still be out there jumping from garage to garage and never knowing when there is going to be enough work to make a decent paycheck. and NO BENEFITS.

sure, there are lazy folks that don't deserve their paychecks at Verizon. And there are technicians that do more damage than work.. there is some of that everywhere. union or not.

union ibew local 477
had been non-union until 1990..attitudes are the same between union and non union..just happy to make a decent living and not being taken for granted by a clueless boss..when i was non union i was asked to help out on saturday at a general dynamics job and worked 8 hours..got my paycheck on wednesday for like 6.23hrs overtime..asked the boss whats up with that, i worked 8 hours..he says that equates to 8 hours straight time..too bad for you..that doesnt happen in the unions..jerk off bosses like him are part of the reason for unions..

not true..for instance when a "government job is done, school, military, government building, etc..pay is based on prevailing wage which is typically union scale..if you are non union working for $15 an hour and are put on a school, your pay is almost double..a large benfit i'd say..unfortunately there are unscrupulous people will cook their books and show paying their employee's scale but in fact aren't and are pocketing the diffrence..

"Prevailing wage" is another ultra left wing tactic meant to inflate prices. If I have to pay "prevailing wages", that means I have to pay my best non-union contractor double his rate. This is why the school systems are constantly over budget.

One job with the union, one without. I feel safer with my union job, can't lose it as easily and CAN'T be laid off... so yea unions are worth it

It's interesting how union workers leverage their way to high wages that are (arguably) higher than what is fair and then wonder why jobs go overseas. Union workers try to make their lot better, management tries to make the shareholders' lot better, and on and on..... More power to anyone that can increase their personal income, but know that it does not occur in a vacuum!

And the head of the UAW has been complaining a lot about jobs going elsewhere lately, but is he also encouraging his union members to stop shopping at Walmart? Nooooooo! They want those cheap overseas generated prices for themselves, but they expect their employer (and now taxpayers) to pay top dollar. You can't apply the same logic to both situations.

Everything is connected.......sort of the "every action causes an equal and opposite reaction" law.
