How many people are Union?

sorry you had a bad experience..you wouldn't have that with our company..unfortunately some don't care..union or not..i see it alot..
for me, as a layman, i am proud to be union but not always proud of the union..we have a couple of people on our local union board that dont belong in the union, let alone on the board but since people dont want to get involved, we live with it.quite embarrasing to me personally..

I guess I am a bit biased, because if it wasn't for my reasonably well paying union/government job, I would still be living with mom and dad, would not have a nice car and my own house..and...most importantly..

would not have my 150 gallon fish tank!! LOL
in all seriousness, if it wasn't for unions fighting over the years, my profession would be getting peanuts.

and we are an essential service. water/wastewater treatment is crucial to protecting public health.

we have to be licensed, have post secondary education and pass certification exams (to get a high operator class level), get so many CEU's (continuing education units) each year, etc etc.

and yet we still get lower wages than other equivelent skilled trades..

I never got paid more for being in a union. Maybe if your older and have more experience but for someone young I got paid very poorly. I mean .15 cent raises is nothing.

Like I said maybe if your career is an electrician compared to me when I was younger(16) you will get paid more but I started out at the min. wage of 6 bucks.

capitalism.... the strong survive.... i believe unions disrupt this.... competition breeds inovation and production.... i have friends who are union workers and im happy they found "stability" in a career.... but i also do business with many union workers (airlines) its no coencidence that many of the "American" airlines are constantly going out of business or filing chapter 13.... While foreign airlines thrive....in essence unions itself is a business.... except they do not have any competition.... again violating the law of nature.... We are living in a age of "global" competition.... the world is getting smaller everyday with technology....

I was nearly homeless a decade ago.... my life change when i took full responsibility for my future.... entitled to nothing... but promised myself everything... only i have a say in what i can earn.... many people forget... regardless if your self employed or work for a huge coglomerate.... you are always a independant contractor.... trading services for currency....

with that being said....i dont believe we should do away with unions as a whole.... but reform is needed in many organizations....

You were in the wrong union. I was in the grocery union once before the wages/scales went south. It was ok pay but not enough to make even a decent living from.

But the union still get their dues, right? Isn't that kind of absurd that the top dogs at the union don't have to rock with the ebb and flow of the economy? They continue to prosper and generally have not done a thing to help the economy. At least large corporate owners/CEO's take part in decision making to make the company they are running more prosperous. Am I correct with this statement? I am not union, so I am not real savvy of what it's all about at the top of the chain.

you pay your dues, both literally and figuratively to head up a union, at least in the trades. to get to the desk job, you've been breaking your back out at the job sites for a while. honestly, in the new england area, especially rhode island, even the union bosses are suffering since they have no work coming in. they can't make money without work. my buddy is probably going to get most of the summer off from a carpenter's union in RI

You don't have to be proud to be union, only proud of your work. For my profession, there is no union. We get paid what the market dictates. If your boss is proud of your work you make an honest living. If he is not then you get fired.

Here's a little lesson in economics: Any organization that conspires to drive up prices is a cartel. The main reason most cartels fail in society is because there is an incentive to cheat. If John and Jake are both the only available suppliers of apples, and they are selling apples for a dollar, they both should see the same amount of business, all things equal. If they got together and decided to sell apples for two dollars, they should both make an extra dollar profit on every sale if they are the only suppliers. Then we come to incentive. If John brakes the agreement and sells apples out his back door for a buck and a half, he can steal some of Jake's business and still be getting 50% more revenue on those sales.

Moral of the story: SOME union workers don't make what they say they are making. They have the incentive to cheat. Some money sounds better than no money, right? They cook the books, perform the same quality work, and screw the rest of the union workers, the same way the "scabs" screw the union workers out of a job. I love how the economy corrects itself.

Non- Union all the way. I worked for a company before the union was voted in, i didnt get a pay raise when the union came in. I now work for a company that has to divisions, union and non-union, on the union side there are people that been there 30 or 40 years and make 11 dollars and hour, a new hire comes in and in six months makes what the guy working there 30+ years makes. Whats the union doing for them, just taking their union dues in MY opinion. I've worked for both, i prefer non-union. Peace people.
