She sounds like an idiot.

Yeah, I don't think it was necessary to put words in people's mouths in a simple yes or no poll, but that's beside the point...

Have her take a look at this:http://en.microcosmaquariumexplorer.com/wiki/Buy_A_%28Wild%29_Fish_-_Save_A_Tree
Paying people to catch wild ornamental fish (in a sustainable way) instead of slashing and burning the forests for agriculture actually helps preserve the ecosystems

I don't understand how it is racist or even slightly politically incorrect to state that some people in various Asian, African, and South American countries base their livelihood on catching and selling aquarium fish.

I think everyone has at some point wether they realize it or not. My loricariids are mostly wild caught. I had a 220 with mostly triggers and they were all wild caught.

I know she's entitled to her opinion, but alot of the species we all keep are wild caught

I have read that article before and that's why I was shocked when my boss handed me a letter from her. I plan on printing this so my bosses can see the real world replies, not just the one lady that has her opinion on how things work.

I think the questionability of keepign wild caughts is how it effects the wild populations and the native habitate to begin with.. That aside..other then the outragous claims.. which sadly likely come from to much pride in her degree. though my brother is a biology major working on his PHD he will ask me questions about his frogs and in the past fish... because he's spent his time in a lab mostly and i've spent it in the pet industry. while these both obviously compliment eachother.. I couldn't tell you much on a scinetific scale about thigns.. where he will give often give me scientific "mumbo jumbo" I call it.. Lab work is very different from hobby work.. yet in some ways very similar. We def have a few people around here who bridge both very very well. And I've encountered a fair share like the woman you decribe. I've also met a few marine biology majors who couldn't tell me much about a fish other then it's scientific name.. but proceeded to tell me how to run my salt tank in the past.

My question: what qualifies her to make that statement? Has she traveled to SA, CA, Asia, and Africa and gone to collecting sites and talked the the people doing the collecting?

wOW. That lady is such a dumb nut (not allowed to swear in MFK). Anyways, if you see the lady next time tell her that the majority of exotic fish in the store are wild caught. print the results of the poll down and the next time you see her, diss her her with the results! who is with me?

Yeah there are so many species that are totally wild caught. You just can't breed every thing in captivity. Yet. My electric catfish is wild caught. Its not know to be breed in captivity.
