How many polys in a 75 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your clarification of your previous statement helps clear things up a bit as far as what you meant.

Also, many people as well as most stores are not good examples of proper fish keeping...

Yeah they aren't, but I'm pretty sure the list of species should be able to live healthy in a 75gal as long as maintenance is kept up.

Alright then I retract my statement, I thought you meant overstock however you want, however I still highly disagree with you saying that they will only grow to the size of the tank. And I do agree that 7-8 upper jaw species(excluding ornate and tuegelsi) will probably be fine in a 75g for life.

It really depends on the fish. Some do grow based on size of the tank.

So I am looking just for a general idea that out of these species:
~P. Retropinnis
~P. Palmas palmas
~P. Palmas polli
~P. Palmas Buettikoferi
~P. Senagelus
~P. Senagelus Albino
~P. Delhezi

How many could I have in my standard 75 gallon (48"x18") with a wet/dry sump filter (and it's completely covered, so no fishy suicide), if I go with all bichirs, and no other fish?

And what if I wanted to add 2 ropefish (I'm aware they are in the same family as the bichirs), how many then? (Do you think ropefish would do okay in a 75 gallon, or is it too small?)

Thanks!

Good thing the list doesn't include ornates or teugelsi!

Just want to say, I had NO intentions of keeping ALL those polys. I believe somewhere in this thread, that I said that I just made the list so people would know what list I am choosing from? Since if I said "upper jaw" sp, then that would include endlicheri and ornates, and if I said the 12-14" max size ones, that would of been confusing as well. So I should of worded it better, but I NEVER planned on keeping ALL of them in there, just wanted to give the list I was choosing from. :)

Also, I am one of those "tank police" kinda people... :)

I think that you've gotten the answer to your original question by now; you definitely seem to know what you're doing. :D

I am seeing allot of opinions posted here that seem to be from speculation, extrapolation from other fish, research from the internet, but not much from actual experiance. For example stating the potential 3' size of some bichirs, really anyone with much time keeping polypterus knows that is not the case with captive fish are really only a handfull of certain types in the wild.(PBB, Ansorgii, Congicus). Now I am not advocating the cramming of fish like sardines into your tank, but really the issue is with health stocking levels. Sub 12" upper jaws in a 75, easily 10 to 12 provided good filtration and water changes. Now would they be happy? How do you assess that? Are they happier in the wild with the risk of predation? Or captive in our tanks? Realistically any tank we provide is too small compared to their native habitat.

My advice to the OP. Go through the forum and lounge and look at others tanks, see different examples from the Heavily planted beaut of James F, to the large open tank of Hao and everything inbetween.

There are many examples of keepers with what some on this thread would considered overstocked tanks that has outstanding health fish with no aggression in the tank.

Most of all get a variety of opinions, do not look at one person as gospel. Research and see what actually works.

Good luck

Just wanted to say that I was referring to the ropes that reach 3 feet, as I have read between 15-36" online for some ropes. Not any of the bichirs :)

So a lot of the bichirs now and days are CB? Would you say that palmas polli, retropinnis, and delhezi have a chance of being captive bred?

I've been looking through a lot of bichir tanks, and I personally am going to try to mimic something similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rpld7EaFd4 That's the tank I saw that first got me interested in bichirs :D

Thanks for the good luck wishes :0)

Yeppers, and then some. Lol. It's looking like it will be 4 bichirs (pretty good chance it will be the albino sen, sen, delhezi, and either palmas polli or retropinnis- I like how they both have the potentially of being really dark/black), I'm not going to do eels or ropes anymore, and then a few mid/top dwellers (no idea what for sure yet, lol) and thanks :)
